We are working with an established manufacturer of high-performance motion control technology company based in Gloucestershire, UK.

They are recruiting for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join their team.

In return for a salary in the region £50.000 - £75.000 along with excellent employment benefits.

We are seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer with experience in industrial automation, robotics and motion control algorithm development to join their innovative Engineering team, and play a key role in the specification, design and implementation of high-performance industrial motion control systems.

You will architect, develop, and optimise the algorithms and real-time firmware for industry leading motion and robotic control system, and will collaborate cross-functionally with the hardware and application engineering teams to translate complex requirements into reliable, scalable, and safety-compliant solutions.

The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in real-time industrial control, motion and trajectory planning, robotic kinematics and dynamics algorithm development, embedded operating systems (RTOS), and low-level driver development.

A solid foundation in control theory and system modelling is essential, along with proficiency in C/C++ and embedded debugging tools.

Additionally, knowledge of Linux based embedded systems, signal processing, motor control (servo and stepper), and industrial fieldbus communications (e. g.

Ether CAT, CANopen) would be beneficial.

This position requires a hands‑on technical expert who can drive architecture decisions, mentor Engineers, and develop robust, maintainable code in performance-sensitive environments.

Experience with industrial standards, functional safety, and deployment in high-reliability manufacturing or robotic systems is highly valued.

The team is involved in the full software development lifecycle, from requirement definition, design, implementation, integration, test, through to delivery and customer support.

Key Responsibilities include

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for motion control and robotics platforms.
  • Implement and optimise real‑time control algorithms for precision motion control.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate software with bespoke electronics and sensors.
  • Develop and troubleshoot software solutions on bespoke hardware platforms.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to maintain high standards of quality and reliability.
  • Mentor Junior Engineers and contribute to technical discussions and project planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field.
  • Proven experience in embedded software development using C/C++ on embedded platforms.
  • Strong background in real-time systems targeting single and multi-core processors, including ARM™ based processors.
  • Demonstrable expertise in developing and testing motion control algorithms.
  • Experience of developing embedded real time RTOSs.
  • Solid understanding of robotics, kinematics, and their practical applications in automation.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Debug tools, such as Lauterbach™ and SEGGER™ J‑ink, oscilloscopes and logic analysers.
  • Software configuration tools, such as Git and SVN/Subversion.
  • CI/CD pipeline toolchains.

Desirable Requirements

  • Knowledge of standards for industrial automation products
  • Experience of cyber security standards and the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)
  • High level programming languages; for example, Python, MATLAB / Simulink.
  • Knowledge of servo and stepper motors.
  • Knowledge of interfacing automation hardware with electrical systems and the principles of machine control.
  • PLC programming, preferably using the standard IEC61131-3 environment.
