  • We speak clearly, honestly and with passion for what we do.
  • We take time to understand problems so we can give confident solutions.
  • We are a unified team, developing Riskhub together, because we believe what we’re doing is good.
  • Everyone’s ideas are valid and welcome.
  • Our entire team is empowered to make decisions.
  • We get things done.

Role Purpose: This is a senior, hands-on surveying role at the centre of our fire safety compliance and remediation work. You will lead fire risk assessment and survey instructions across residential, mixed-use and complex portfolios — from Type 1 through to intrusive Type 4 assessments, external wall appraisals and compartmentation surveys — and turn what you find on site into clear, defensible advice our clients can act on. You will also act as a checker and technical reference point for others, and your expertise will directly shape how a growing consultancy delivers. We are equally interested in fire surveyors and building surveyors with strong fire competence. If you can evidence the competence to deliver all or most of the responsibilities below, we would like to talk to you.

Senior Fire Surveyor – Job Description (Core Responsibilities):

  • Complete Fire Risk Assessments (to include residential Type 1 to Type 4), including intrusive assessments and construction-phase FRAs, in line with PAS 79, BS 9792 and applicable guidance;
  • Carry out site surveys in support of Fire Risk Appraisal of External Walls (FRAEW) works under PAS 9980, gathering the evidence needed to support appraisal and remediation decisions;
  • Undertake compartmentation surveys, identifying and reporting on breaches, deficiencies and remedial priorities;
  • Support external wall remediation projects, including survey work, opening-up strategies, specification input and monitoring of remedial works;
  • Conduct RIBA Stage 5 inspections on new build projects, reporting on compliance against the approved fire strategy and design intent;
  • Produce fire safety technical notes, survey reports and remediation recommendations that are clear, evidence-based and appropriate to the audience;
  • Apply a working understanding of fire engineering principles in support of design and consultancy works, including ADB, BS 9991, BS 9999 and relevant HTM guidance;
  • Interpret and apply the requirements of the Building Safety Act 2022, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to client portfolios;
  • Act as a checker on reports as part of our three-stage internal review process, and conduct peer reviews;
  • Provide support to junior surveyors and assessors and encourage their development; you may be assigned as a buddy to a graduate or trainee colleague and would be expected to check in with them monthly on progress;
  • Brief, oversee and quality-check the work of trusted sub-contractors engaged on your instructions, ensuring they are competent, properly resourced and delivering to Axion’s standards;
  • Act as a primary point of contact for clients on assigned instructions, attending client and design team meetings in person or remotely;
  • Ensure consistency in technical quality, record-keeping and communication with clients, including accurate and timely use of our compliance platforms;
  • Work within your level of competence at all times, escalating matters that fall outside it;
  • Maintain a CPD log with an aim to become a member of your desired institution or chartered (IFE, RICS, CABE, CIOB etc.).

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Minimum: Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety (or equivalent demonstrable competence);
  • Ideally: Level 5 in Fire Engineering Design or Level 5 in Fire Risk Assessment;
  • A real bonus: RICS Level 6 in External Walls;
  • A degree or HND/HNC in fire engineering, building surveying, building services or a related discipline is welcome but not essential where competence is otherwise evidenced;
  • Membership of, or working towards membership of, a relevant professional body (IFE, RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent);
  • Typically 5+ years’ relevant experience in fire risk assessment, fire surveying or building surveying with a strong fire safety focus, at senior level;
  • A portfolio or sample reports that evidence your competence across the responsibilities above;
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to site.

Sub-Contractor Engagement: Our preference is a permanent appointment, but we are open to engaging the right individual on a sub-contract basis. This suits someone who values flexibility and autonomy but still wants to be embedded within a growing consultancy where their contribution genuinely matters — a long-term, trusted working relationship rather than ad-hoc instructions.

What we would need from a sub-contractor:

  • The ability to deliver the same scope of technical work described above, to the same standard and within the same review process;
  • Flexibility to respond to project demands, with the capacity to scale up when the pipeline is busy;
  • Full professional indemnity insurance at a level appropriate to the work, together with public liability cover;
  • Qualifications and evidenced competence as set out above, supported by an up-to-date CPD record;
  • A willingness to work within Axion’s quality management system, including our three-stage internal review process;
  • Use of Riskhub for reporting, project tracking and record-keeping;
  • Strong communication skills — you may work independently, but you are never working in isolation;
  • The relevant business arrangements in place (limited company or self-employed status, right to work, and satisfactory completion of our supply chain onboarding checks).

Day rates will be discussed on application and will reflect experience, competence and availability. The benefits set out below apply to permanent employees. We prioritise diversity and inclusion and are proud to hold a Diversity Mark accreditation, recognising the importance of representing our diverse customer base. We strive to attract the best talent and create an environment that supports and includes all individuals.
