Do you want to make an invaluable difference to vulnerable teenagers’ lives? Are you looking for a rewarding job role working with children who have complex behaviour and mental health needs? Do you have experience supporting individuals with mental health needs? Or perhaps you have studied Psychology, Sociology or Education? We have an exciting opportunity for a Mental Health Teaching Assistant (TA) to start in September in a lovely Alternative Provision primary school in Swindon. The pupils in the school all have SEMH needs and have struggled with mainstream schooling. This school takes a creative approach to the curriculum with a strong emphasis on active and outdoor learning. Many of the students have become disengaged with their learning, so the priority of teachers and support staff is to motivate and inspire pupils to try their best in school by making learning fun and engaging, working with the individual needs and interests of the students.
Responsibilities
- Work one-to-one and with small groups to deliver targeted interventions.
- Re‑engage and motivate students who have had negative school experiences.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience working with individuals with SEMH and mental health needs.
- Resilient and able to manage complex behaviour empathetically and positively, using appropriate prevention and de‑escalation strategies.
- Enjoy a working day that is different every day and can adapt to the needs of each student.
- Have an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or be willing to obtain one.
Additional Information
Due to the nature of supporting a child with SEMH needs, the school aims to provide consistency for everyone involved, consequently ideally looking for someone to commit to this role in the long‑term. You will need to be in school from 8.30 until 3.30 pm. This is a full‑time role from Monday to Friday during term‑time, starting in January and may become permanent for the right person. Salary / Pay Rate will be dependent on your skills and experience.
