Are you a recent graduate in psychology, education, or a related field eager to launch a purposeful career in Special Educational Needs? Or are you already working in SEND and seeking a role to deepen your expertise in relational approaches, positive behaviour support, and trauma-informed practice while advancing towards senior mentoring, specialist roles, or qualified teaching pathways? This role is with a well‑reputed Special Educational Needs School in East Bristol serving up to around 170 pupils aged 2–19 with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD), often complex medical needs, autism, or behaviours that challenge. The school emphasises a deeply relational ethos—placing relationships at the centre of everything. Behaviour is understood as communication of underlying emotional needs, and the team responds with empathy, curiosity, respect, nurture, clear boundaries, and proactive strategies. The focus is on building positive self-esteem, emotional safety, connection, inclusion, and a true sense of belonging for every pupil—creating a calm, welcoming environment where young people can thrive. This is an ideal setting for graduates or career-progressors passionate about developmental psychology, emotional regulation, positive behaviour support, and holistic child development.

You’ll gain hands-on experience in a progressive, high-support environment with excellent multi-agency collaboration (SALT, OT, physio, and more).

Role responsibilities

  • As a Learning & Behaviour Mentor, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting pupils to develop self-regulation, positive behaviours, emotional literacy, and independence through strong, trusting relationships and evidence-informed strategies.
  • Forming consistent, respectful relationships to nurture emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging.
  • Mentoring individuals and small groups with proactive, relational techniques to promote self-regulation and internal control.
  • Contributing to and implementing personalised behaviour support plans in collaboration with teachers, therapists, families, and the wider team.
  • Responding to behaviour with empathy and curiosity – exploring root causes and applying restorative, regulatory approaches.
  • Working within the school's least-restrictive, nurture-focused framework to ensure safety, dignity, and respect (drawing on principles such as relational theory and positive behaviour support).
  • Celebrating achievements, reinforcing positive choices, and helping pupils experience success and contribution.
  • Supporting across all phases (early years through to college) in classrooms, sensory spaces, hydrotherapy, outdoor learning, and community activities.
  • Engaging with parents/carers and external professionals to deliver joined-up, holistic support.

What we’re looking for

  • Graduates (psychology, education, childhood studies, or similar) or experienced support staff keen to specialise in relational/positive behaviour approaches.
  • Genuine passion for understanding behaviour as communication and supporting emotional needs.
  • Empathy, patience, calm presence, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to stay reflective and centred in emotionally demanding situations.
  • Enthusiasm for professional development and career growth in SEN, psychology, or education.
  • No specific prior experience is essential if you bring the right values and mindset – induction training and SEND-specific CPD training will be provided.
