Overview
Axcis Education is currently recruiting for a full-time Teaching Assistant to work in a specialist college in Exeter. This long-term role is ideal for someone with previous experience supporting individuals with special educational needs, particularly those with complex needs.
The college caters for young people aged 11 to 15 with a range of needs including Autism, learning difficulties, pre-verbal or non-verbal communication, and behaviours that may challenge. These behaviours are understood and supported as a form of communication. The focus is on developing independence, communication skills, and preparing learners for adult life in a nurturing and inclusive environment.
Responsibilities
- Support students on a one-to-one basis or within small groups.
- Assist with communication using tools such as visual aids, Makaton, or PECS.
- Provide personal care and physical support where necessary.
- Respond calmly and effectively to behaviours that challenge.
- Be flexible and adaptable, moving between classes or areas of the site as needed.
- Work closely with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to create a positive, consistent and safe learning environment.
Requirements / Experience
- Experience in SEND settings, whether as a Teaching Assistant, support worker, care assistant, youth worker, or similar role.
- Resilient, empathetic, and comfortable working where pupils may communicate in non-traditional ways and require a high level of support.
- A strong understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to the wellbeing of young people.
