A specialist SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) primary school located in the picturesque area of Poole, Dorset, is currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join their dynamic team. This outreach role requires a candidate who is passionate about supporting children with SEMH needs and who is a confident driver, willing to assist in transportation needs for the children.

Responsibilities:

  • Work under the guidance of teaching/senior staff to support the delivery of quality education and provide tailored support to children with SEMH issues.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students with specific needs.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to children who are facing social, emotional, and mental health challenges.
  • Facilitate outreach activities and transportation to engage students with their learning environment and external therapeutic services.
  • Collaborate closely with teachers and parents to reinforce positive behaviour and promote inclusive education.
  • Monitor and evaluate students’ responses and progress against action plans through observation and record-keeping.
  • Support with the management of classroom resources and ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Engage in professional development activities to further enhance skills and understanding of SEMH needs.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working as a teaching assistant or within a similar role supporting children with SEMH needs.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to transport students as required.
  • A patient, empathetic approach, with the resilience to manage challenging behaviours constructively.
  • Excellent communication skills and the capacity to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • An understanding of the strategies needed to establish a supportive and nurturing classroom.
  • A commitment to continuing professional development and the flexibility to meet the changing needs of the students.
  • Enhanced DBS check or willingness to undergo one.
