As an Underwriter II, you will be responsible for underwriting business within the agreed business plan and your individual authority. The role requires a commitment to providing excellent service to clients and brokers, and in-office presence or at Lloyd’s 3-4 days per week. The portfolio includes direct, facultative and treaty reinsurance written within a defined risk appetite. It is a profitable, diversified book with opportunities to develop and learn, and to build the book as part of the team. Profitable, organic growth is the core objective for the portfolio, consistent with AXA XL’s Large Corporate and Speciality division of AXA Group.
What you’ll do
- Review submissions including applications, policy wording, inspection reports, loss runs, and financial reports, researching to determine degree of risk for each account. This includes open market (Direct & Fac) and lineslip business plus binding authorities across Lloyds and Company platforms.
- Calculate appropriate risk premium considering risk costs inherent to the sector, reinsurance cessions, and underwriting and admin costs while ensuring profitability.
- Advise, assist, service, and follow up with clients on insurance/reinsurance and risk management matters to ensure satisfaction and fulfillment of insurance requirements.
- Manage relationships to initiate opportunities for cross-selling offered products and to ensure account retention.
- Ensure timely implementation of new and renewed accounts according to quality standards.
- In coordination with internal teams, determine appropriate reinsurance for risk placements (excess of loss and quota share).
- Review loss control reports and manage policy endorsement requests to process necessary changes.
- Support the business planning and forecasting process; monitor financial exposure and premium income within set limits.
- Maintain awareness of all claims advised and provide input on settlement of claims.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent)
- Experience in the relevant class of business with functional knowledge of underwriter practices
- Industry knowledge and commercial/business acumen
- Analytical, negotiation, and sales/marketing skills
- Excellent written and oral communication; strong customer service focus
- Interpersonal savvy with ability to build insured and broker contacts
- Ability to develop and understand business processes, strategy, and planning
- Collaborative team player able to provide creative solutions
