Pricing Analytics & Models (PAM) is a unit of AXA XL’s insurance division that enables product pricing actuaries and underwriters to harness information, deploy tools, and generate insights that improve portfolio management and increase profitability. The Pricing Models team (PMU) within PAM works with pricing actuaries to design, build, and implement the algorithms that underpin premium calculations for the company’s global casualty, professional, property, and specialty lines. The PMU brings a special combination of actuarial expertise, technical knowledge, and coding skills necessary to engineer, maintain, and enhance those algorithms.

AXA XL is currently in the middle of a multi-year transformation initiative that will streamline and upgrade workflows across the enterprise. At the heart of that initiative is the creation of a cloud-based platform for developing models and delivering everyday analytics. With this new platform, AXA XL will improve the consistency, performance, precision and accuracy of its pricing tools. Our PMU team members are crucial contributors to this project – they shape best practice in the design and construction of pricing algorithms in Python and R, and provide effective support for line of business pricing teams migrating to our new platform.

What you’ll be doing

What will your essential responsibilities include?

Development of PMU core standards

  • Assist in standardising actuarial methodologies and model implementation across lines of business and developing core module packages and frameworks
  • Ensure consistency of pricing model data capture and ability to reuse that data for other purposes

Algorithm design and build

  • Support line of business actuaries in aligning pricing models with approved methodologies, core modules and standards ready for implementation
  • Identify opportunities for improving user experience, logic and coding within pricing models
  • Assist in conducting actuarial model review, implementing model code in Python and R, and testing and reporting model accuracy and performance
  • Create consistent technical documentation for actuarial methodologies and frameworks contained within the platform

Delivery leadership and support

  • Take ownership of projects in accordance with Agile delivery methods, applying rigorous standards in reviewing the work of others and managing junior resources
  • Serve as technical delivery lead for individual pricing model transformations, defining work items and assisting delivery team in prioritisation of work during sprint planning
  • Establish and leverage a effective network of relationships with other business and technical teams, including but not limited to: pricing actuaries, line of business underwriters, underwriting leadership, operations and IT
  • Build connections between pricing tools and third-party services/data as well as integration with other internal systems

You will report to the Head of Pricing Models.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities, skills and experience:

Required

  • Significant experience in large commercial non-life pricing
  • Qualification level – qualified / nearly qualified actuary
  • Ability to lead projects independently and manage workloads across different projects effectively
  • Proven ability to think strategically with a passion for innovation and a desire to utilise new technologies
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Technical aptitude with commercial experience of programming (Python / R / SQL)
  • Ability to distil complex technical concepts and processes into clear, concise, and easily understandable terms
  • Collaborative work ethic
  • Pragmatic and delivery-focused
  • Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, Mathematics, Applied Math, Statistics, or related field

Desired

  • Experience working on pricing tool development, business reporting, analytical projects and / or case pricing
  • Experience of working with underwriters, pricing actuaries, software engineers and other technical teams (operations and IT)
  • Experience in people management
