Description

Breakthrough technology is vital for strengthening the UK’s Defence and Homeland Security. As Technician at Awerian, you will be at the forefront of this innovation race to defend and protect the UK.

Your work will have a real-world impact. You will get to explore pioneering concepts by collaborating with dynamic, highly motivated, multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and engineers. You’ll see ideas become a reality as you create impactful solutions through Awerian’s rapid approach to design and implementation. It’s a fantastically challenging, varied, and agile role.

The Role

The Technician role at Awerian comes with autonomy and responsibility that can be tailored to match your own ambitions and experience. It’s a role that will see you involved from initial concept demonstrators and proof-of-principle test rigs, through building, commissioning, testing and helping to optimise test systems and product prototypes.

You will take responsibility for working with project teams to design and manufacture experimental equipment, assemble project hardware and help with a range of fixing, debugging and problem-solving challenges across the company.

You will be fully embedded in project teams, where your practical problem-solving skills will have direct impact on the success of our exciting and diverse projects. You’ll work closely within teams of scientists and engineers and have the opportunity to directly liaise with our suppliers and clients.

Awerian values breadth of experience, as well as depth. You will have the opportunity both to extend and enhance your existing skills, and to develop and train new capabilities.

Existing experience of working with electronic systems is essential. Additional experience of informal mechanical design and manufacture would be an advantage, as would experience in the use of commercial CAD software packages.

Depending on experience, you will also have the opportunity to take on responsibility for running Awerian’s project, laboratory and workshop facilities, and the chance to grow a supporting team around you as Awerian continues to expand.

The responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Building devices, machinery or test systems, working closely with Mechanical and Electronic Engineers
  • Debugging mechanical and electrical operation in conjunction with subject matter experts
  • Electrical wiring to schematics
  • Modification/rework of PCBs using bench-top soldering facilities
  • Mechanical build using hand-tools and possibly machine tools according to experience
  • Carrying out informal testing to own initiative
  • Contributing to generation of design/build documentation
  • Actively generating design or manufacturing process improvements
  • Design and fabrication of assembly and test jigs as required
  • Establish and maintain organised and tidy build areas

Requirements

We are looking for someone with hands-on experience with products or instruments in an R&D setting, involved in building, commissioning, testing and iterative debugging. Further requirements include:

  • Confident user of hand tools and soldering equipment
  • Confident user of basic electronics test equipment such as multimeters, power supplies and component testers
  • Electromechanical assembly of electronics, cables and mechanical enclosures
  • Working with partial requirements and contributing to the design process
  • Experience in electronics rework especially surface mount devices and fine pitch ICs (i.e. BGA/QFN/CSP)
  • Experience working in a R&D environment
  • Experience in 3D printing
  • Experience in metal machining (e.g. of mills and lathes)

You will be a great fit with this role if you can show:

  • Adaptability and flexibility to changing project priorities
  • Ability to work proactively and independently, but with the judgement to seek help and collaboration where needed
  • Determination to follow through on challenging tasks and adapt to requirements that are not necessarily well defined or have a clear route to a solution
  • Ability to manage own workload, communicating realistic timescales to others to help in overall project planning
  • And lastly, a genuine interest and enthusiasm in our mission to invent groundbreaking technologies which keep the UK safe
