About the apprenticeship:
As a Building Services Engineering Degree Apprentice, you will work towards a BEng (Hons) in Building Services Engineering. The programme includes:
- Part time day release: Apprentices attend university once a week
- Formal lectures, study guides, course notes, directed reading, class tutorials, assignments, small group projects, workshops and laboratories.
- Assessment of the academic element of this apprenticeship will consist of coursework, exams and timed assessments.
- Employer focused contextual content
As a Building Services Engineer degree apprentice, first we\'ll teach you the fundamental scientific principles that support mechanical and electrical building services. Following this, you\'ll explore in more depth how to operate and control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. In the final year, we\'ll focus on sustainability: the dynamic thermal performance of buildings, energy resources, combined heat and power, wind power generation and lighting and electrical systems.
We set lots of design projects to simulate a working environment and you can expect to use computer modelling techniques to optimise and refine your design proposals, as well as laboratory/workshop experiments.
Opportunities when you complete your apprenticeship:
Following completion of your placements and subject to the business needs and your career aspirations, your final role placement will be selected, and you will complete your training as a professional engineer in this area.

Entry Requirements:
A Level BBC Must include Maths and a science in either Chemistry or Physics (UCAS points 112) or T-level (Merit or above) in Construction: Design, Surveying And Planning. (UCAS points: 120) or BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma DDM in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics (UCAS points: 128) or BTEC Level 3 National Diploma D*D* in an Engineering subject area, with a minimum of merit in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. (UCAS points: 112)
Applicants must be aged 18 or over, as of 31st August 2026 due to security clearance requirements

Start Date: Tuesday 1st September 2026
Annual leave will not be granted from 1st September until 2nd October 2026 due to mandatory inductions you are required to complete as part of your apprenticeship. Any leave approved after this point will depend on the training provider requirements for your apprenticeship and must be agreed in advance.
Duration: 72 months
Recruitment Process:

Online test: If successful, you will be invited to complete our online assessment stage. These include online testing against numerical, verbal, logical and cognitive reasoning tests. Don\'t be intimidated: practice assessments will be available so you will be fully equipped with the knowledge of what to expect.
Virtual assessment: Those successful at testing will be invited to a virtual assessment centre. The Assessment Centres are scheduled for 11th and 16th February 2026. Please note that these dates may be subject to change, but rest assured, we\'ll keep all applicants informed throughout the process.
These roles are governed by Health and Safety at Work Regulations and require all candidates to have an Occupational Health pre-employment medical held at AWE which follows the initial selection process. All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role and be willing and able to work in designated areas.
