Job Overview: The Welding Engineer / Welding Inspection Coordinator will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing welding procedures and techniques to ensure the production of high-quality welds and ensuring personnel are qualified. The Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC) will act as a subject matter expert for all welding-related issues within the business.
Duties:
- Review contractual manufacturing specifications and technical data provided by clients and comment on capability of the business to deliver to the welding requirements.
- Ensure that all necessary information to carry out welding operations is generated and available prior to commencement of work.
- Support the business during client & 3rd party audits, ensuring compliance with BS EN ISO 3834, BS EN 1090-2 & the Specification for Highway Works (SHW) Series 1800 Structural Steelwork.
- Produce, manage, and review parent material specifications and weld joint properties.
- Establish quality requirements for welding operations/deposited welds.
- Specify welding procedures in accordance with all relevant standards, non-destructive test procedures, and heat treatment procedures.
- Organise independent inspection/verification when required by a project.
- Direct and co-ordinate technical personnel in performing welding inspections to ensure compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards.
- Develop welding techniques, procedures, and applications of welding equipment and processes for problem solving involving fabrication of metals.
- Evaluate new developments and technologies in welding for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
- Implement and oversee auditing of welding personnel.
- Compile project-specific Inspection and Test Plans to meet project specifications.
- Oversee all welding coordination activities at all company facilities.
- Ensure that any weld defects or weld-related NCRs are fully investigated, root causes established, and preventative measures implemented.
Candidate Requirements:
- Significant demonstrable experience in welding engineering.
- Arc welding implementation in industry (including support of new process users).
- Standards interpretation, weld inspection, and testing.
- Weld procedure specification and qualification.
- Certified Welding Engineer (EWF/IIW).
- Degree or significant demonstrable experience in welding engineering coupled with vocational qualifications and Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
- Ability to understand and assess technical problems, generating solutions through application of process knowledge, experimental trials, and process development.
- Excellent planning and organisation skills applicable to scoping, launch, and delivery of projects to time, cost, and quality targets.
- Close collaboration with engineering, quality, and technical support colleagues to meet customer expectations.
- Effective communication through various media (written, verbal & IT) to support business development, customer enquiries, and project delivery in a direct customer-facing role.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
- Knowledge of safety procedures.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- (Preferred) A track record of performing in a similar role.
- Working towards, or hold, Incorporated or Chartered status linked to membership of a relevant professional institute.
