Salaries: £16,857 Actual Annual Salary (£24,796 FTE) + Benefits.

Location: Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire.

Job Type: Full‑Time, Temporary.

Working Hours: 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:45am – 3:15pm, Term Time Only (38 weeks).

JOB OVERVIEW

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Special Needs Assistant / SEN Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support for a child with additional needs within a friendly and inclusive primary school. As a Special Needs Assistant / SEN Teaching Assistant you will work closely with teachers and SEND staff to support learning, encourage independence and help pupils achieve their individual potential. This position would suit someone with a child‑centred approach who enjoys supporting young people. Previous experience of working with children with SEND is desirable, although applications are also welcomed from graduates interested in a future career in teaching.

DUTIES

  • Provide One‑to‑One Support: Support an individual pupil with their learning, wellbeing and daily school activities.
  • Assist Classroom Learning: Help pupils remain engaged and complete activities planned by the class teacher.
  • Support Individual Learning: Deliver learning activities tailored to individual needs and review progress alongside teaching staff.
  • Promote Positive Behaviour: Encourage engagement using positive behaviour management strategies and structured routines.
  • Work with Teaching Staff: Liaise effectively with teachers, SEND colleagues and external professionals where appropriate.
  • Maintain Safeguarding Standards: Follow safeguarding, child protection and confidentiality procedures at all times.
  • Supervise Pupils: Support children during playtimes and other school activities when required.
  • Attend Training: Participate in relevant training and professional development opportunities.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

ESSENTIAL

  • Passionate about supporting children to achieve their full potential.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and positively engage pupils.
  • Able to work collaboratively while also using initiative independently.
  • Calm, flexible and able to respond effectively to changing situations.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality and child protection responsibilities.

DESIRABLE

  • Previous experience supporting children with Special Educational Needs.
  • Experience working individually with children who have social or communication needs.
  • Knowledge of non‑verbal communication strategies.
  • Recent graduates or individuals considering a future career in teaching are encouraged to apply.
