We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer who can use SOLIDWORKS and has experience designing material handling equipment and machine layouts for manufacturing plants, including steelwork for Skid Frames, Mechanical Equipment Assess Platforms, Staircases, Equipment Support Structures, and Portal Frame Buildings.
Established in 2012 by Design Engineers, the company is a small business located in Derby, recently acquired by a founding member to drive growth. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will join a company providing Design Consultancy services across the UK. They are professional, innovative, and thrive on quality work. The work is project-based, varied, and fast-paced. The company designs and details for manufacture and installation bespoke mechanical and structural solutions, specializing in industrial plant design, particularly bulk materials handling and processing of powders and liquids. The majority of designs are one-offs. They produce detailed manufacturing drawings for items such as silos, hoppers, belt conveyors, bucket elevators, mills, dryers, and coolers, and undertake structural design and steelwork detailing for plant structures, access, and portal frame buildings. They also undertake product design and development for clients, ranging from major blue-chip companies to small local fabricators.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, using CAD software like SOLIDWORKS, you will primarily design and detail plant layout, bespoke systems, and equipment from proposal to commissioning. The role includes basic project management. It is primarily home-based with occasional office and site visits. This position offers a great opportunity to join a small company where your input is valued.
DUTIES- Design from concept to detail
- Produce detailed design documentation, including 3D models, 2D sketches, general arrangements, manufacturing drawings, P&ID, schematics, material lists, and mechanical calculations
- Create supporting documentation such as user manuals, quality plans, and manufacturing procedures
- Ensure designs meet quality, safety, reliability, maintainability, and cost criteria
- Collaborate with electrical, process control, and other disciplines
- Ensure contracts are completed on time, within quality standards, and budget
- Liaise with suppliers to integrate third-party equipment
- Commercial awareness and drive
- Experience in plant layout and materials handling equipment design (e.g., hoppers, silos, conveyors, bucket elevators, rotary equipment)
- Steelwork design and detailing experience (e.g., skid frames, access platforms, staircases, support structures, portal frames)
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SOLIDWORKS, Tekla, AutoCAD preferred)
- Familiarity with MS Office, Outlook, Adobe
- Team player with excellent interpersonal skills
