We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Senior Science Technician to join a thriving secondary school environment supporting the delivery of engaging science education. As the Senior Science Technician you will provide efficient technician support across the Science Faculty, preparing practical experiments, maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring compliance with health and safety and COSHH procedures.
The successful Senior Science Technician will work closely with teaching staff, support student learning, manage stock and equipment, oversee laboratory safety processes and contribute to a safe and stimulating learning environment. Previous experience within science laboratories, education support or technical support roles would be highly beneficial.
DUTIES
- Preparing Experiments and Equipment: Setting up practical lessons, demonstrations, apparatus and laboratory materials for science teaching activities.
- Maintaining Laboratory Standards: Ensuring laboratories, preparation rooms and equipment remain clean, organised and safe for use.
- Managing Chemicals and Resources: Handling, storing and disposing of chemicals and hazardous materials in line with COSHH, CLEAPSS and health and safety guidance.
- Supporting Teaching Staff: Assisting teachers and students during lessons, practical exercises, field projects and educational activities.
- Monitoring Equipment and Inventory: Maintaining laboratory equipment, updating inventories and arranging repairs where required.
- Stock Control and Purchasing: Supporting stock checks, ordering consumables and monitoring departmental expenditure against budget.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Carrying out safety checks, maintaining risk assessment records and supporting laboratory safety procedures.
- Team Support and Training: Assisting with inductions, training staff on laboratory procedures and supporting other science technicians.
- Administrative Support: Completing science-based clerical duties including record keeping, filing and maintaining accurate documentation.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
- ESSENTIAL
- GCSEs or equivalent qualifications in English, Maths and Science.
- Previous experience within a science laboratory, technician or educational support environment.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, health and safety procedures and COSHH regulations.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and manage multiple tasks.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with staff and students.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and professional standards.
- Willingness to complete first aid training if not already qualified.
- DESIRABLE
- Post-16 science qualification or Level 4 qualification.
- Knowledge of CLEAPSS guidance and laboratory compliance procedures.
- Experience of stock control, purchasing and budget monitoring.
- Experience supervising or supporting other technicians.
- Experience assisting with practical science demonstrations and student activities.
