This role is known internally as a Trainee Accountant.

SALARY: Apprenticeship Level + Study Support + Benefits

LOCATION: Barnsley, South Yorkshire (S73) 100% Site Based

JOB TYPE: Full-Time, Permanent

WORKING HOURS: Monday to Thursday 8.30am - 5.00pm, Friday 8.30am - 3.45pm

JOB OVERVIEW: Due to continued growth, the company has a fantastic new opportunity for a Trainee Accounts Assistant to join its Group Finance team within a well-established steel construction business. As a Trainee Accounts Assistant you will receive full training, development and support while studying towards an AAT qualification. The role offers broad exposure to financial reporting, reconciliations, forecasting, management accounts and cash flow activities across multiple group companies.

The successful Trainee Accounts Assistant will be ambitious, organised and eager to learn, with excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a long-term career in accounting and finance outside of the traditional university route.

DUTIES:

  • Managing Bank Transfers: Perform daily Group bank transfers in line with company banking arrangements
  • Preparing Cash Reporting: Produce weekly cash reconciliations and cash flow forecasts for Group companies
  • Supporting Credit Control: Carry out customer credit checks and liaise with sales teams to resolve queries
  • Maintaining Fixed Asset Records: Take responsibility for fixed asset accounting across Group companies
  • Producing Management Accounts: Support preparation of management accounts including accruals and prepayments
  • Processing Financial Transactions: Raise sales invoices, process purchase invoices and record despatches accurately
  • Supporting Year-End Activities: Assist with audit preparation and liaise with external auditors and tax advisors
  • Monitoring Finance Systems: Respond to and delegate queries through the COINS accounting system
  • Providing Team Support: Assist the Group Financial Controller and finance team with ad hoc tasks and projects

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A* to C in Maths and English at GCSE or equivalent
  • Three A-levels or equivalent at A* to C (obtained or predicted)
  • Strong organisational skills, ability to prioritise tasks and manage deadlines
  • Excellent MS office and IT skills, particularly MS Excel
