This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified accounting and finance professional to join a well-established civil engineering contractor and take ownership of core accounting, reporting, compliance and financial control functions within a busy head office environment.
This is an exciting opportunity for an Accountant to play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting HMRC compliance and improving accounting processes across the organisation. Working as the Accountant you will prepare quarterly management accounts and year-end accounts, oversee reconciliations, manage payroll-related checks and provide financial insight to support business decisions. The Accountant will also provide day-to-day oversight of sales, purchase and payroll office functions, supporting deadlines, internal queries, nominal coding and VAT accuracy.
DUTIES
- Prepare Financial Reports: Prepare quarterly management accounts and year-end accounts, including accruals, prepayments and provisions.
- Manage Tax and Compliance: Lead VAT reconciliations, monthly HMRC payments, CIS return submissions, PAYE, National Insurance and year-end P11Ds.
- Oversee Banking Processes: Maintain the weekly master cash book and complete monthly bank reconciliations within Sage Accounts.
- Support Payroll Accuracy: Review payroll against timesheets, manage weekly agent expenses and maintain company vehicle mileage logs.
- Manage Finance Office Functions: Provide day-to-day oversight of the sales, purchase and payroll offices, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Advise on Finance Queries: Act as the internal point of contact for nominal coding, VAT queries and Sage-related accounting processes.
- Support Subcontractor Processes: Verify subcontractors with HMRC and manage subcontractor retention releases.
- Improve Accounting Processes: Identify opportunities to streamline financial procedures, improve accuracy and strengthen reporting controls.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
- ESSENTIAL: Qualified Accountant.
- Proven experience in a similar senior accounting, finance management or financial control role.
- Strong working knowledge of Sage Accounts and Sage Payroll.
- Experience preparing management accounts, year-end accounts, reconciliations and compliance reports.
- Strong understanding of VAT, HMRC payments, CIS, PAYE, National Insurance and payroll-related processes.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proactive approach to deadlines, process improvement and financial control.
- Confident communication skills with the ability to support internal finance queries.
DESIRABLE
- Previous experience within the construction or civil engineering sector would be highly desirable.
