We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a confident, organised and positive individual who would like to support young people in a secondary school environment. Full training will be provided, so this could suit someone with strong communication skills, confidence working with students and an interest in building a career in education.

SALARY: £18,435 Actual Annual Salary / £28,696 FTE + Benefits

LOCATION: Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire

JOB TYPE: Part-Time, Fixed Term Contract (Starting September 2026 to August 2027)

WORKING HOURS: 28.35 hours per week, 8.30am to 3.10pm Monday to Friday, term time only

JOB OVERVIEW: This is a rewarding opportunity to become involved in the learning and development of young people while gaining valuable school-based experience in a supportive education setting. Working as a Cover Supervisor you will supervise classes during the absence of the regular class teacher, deliver work from existing lesson plans, support positive behaviour and help students remain focused and engaged. The Cover Supervisor role could be a career in itself or act as a springboard into teaching or other work with young people, with training provided and support given to develop your skills. As a Cover Supervisor you will need a calm and professional approach, strong communication skills, the ability to work well as part of a team and a willingness to learn.

DUTIES: Your duties as the Cover Supervisor include:

  • Supervise Lessons: Cover and supervise classes across both key stages during teacher absence, ensuring students remain on task with the work provided
  • Support Tutor Time: Cover tutor registrations, read out daily notices and support students in following classroom expectations
  • Manage Behaviour: Promote positive behaviour, deal promptly with disruption and follow school behaviour, rewards and sanctions procedures
  • Support Learning: Communicate the lesson objective, explain the work set and assist students where possible with understanding and completion
  • Maintain Records: Take lesson registers, record relevant issues and pass information to teachers, tutors or year leaders as required
  • Prepare the Classroom: Ensure resources, books and work are collected, returned and left ready for the class teacher
  • Support Assemblies: Escort and supervise students during assemblies when covering tutor groups
  • Carry Out Duties: Undertake a weekly supervision duty, such as break or lunchtime, and support wider school routines
  • Follow Procedures: Work in line with school policies, safeguarding expectations, health and safety procedures and reasonable instructions
