We are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Mechanical Estimator to join a major project team working on the Net Zero Teesside development. This is a senior estimating position with responsibility for leading and managing the estimating process across assigned bid teams, ensuring accurate, commercially robust pricing and effective cost forecasting. You will play a key role in developing competitive tenders, identifying operational and commercial risks, and delivering high-quality estimating solutions in line with contractual requirements. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Estimator with a strong background in major industrial, energy, petrochemical, nuclear or other highly regulated projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the estimating function within assigned bid teams and manage estimating resources.
  • Undertake estimating activities directly where required.
  • Review drawings, specifications and technical information to develop accurate cost estimates.
  • Carry out detailed measurement, material take-offs and labour/equipment pricing.
  • Develop and review plant rates, installation methods, outputs and plant selection.
  • Work closely with engineering, planning, commercial and procurement teams to develop competitive bids.
  • Analyse subcontractor quotations and commercial submissions.
  • Manage preliminaries, general expenses, plant schedules and risk assessments.
  • Review design options and identify value engineering and cost optimisation opportunities.
  • Ensure all tender and contract submission requirements are fully addressed.
  • Prepare settlement papers and make necessary pricing adjustments.
  • Take responsibility for the sign-off of cost elements prior to financial submission.
  • Develop and maintain cost forecasts and reporting information.
  • Manage customer queries and contribute to post-tender negotiations and meetings.
  • Prepare cost information and presentations for senior management.
  • Ensure an effective handover of tender and bid documentation to the project commercial team.
  • Mentor and support Estimators and wider bid teams, providing commercial and technical guidance.
  • Support the implementation and development of digital estimating tools, including 5D cost planning.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes, systems and tools.
  • Ensure estimating reflects project requirements, programme, methodology and risk profile.
  • Promote a strong culture of Zero Harm, sustainability and continuous improvement.

Essential Experience

  • Significant experience estimating major mechanical installation projects.
  • Experience with large HRSG boilers (2,000+ tonnes).
  • Experience with steam turbine generators (500MW+).
  • Experience with bespoke mechanical equipment, skids and modules.
  • Experience with high-integrity pipework systems.
  • Experience with exotic pipework materials.
  • Experience with mechanical installation and site erection estimating.
  • Experience with customer MTOs and detailed material take-offs.
  • Experience in petrochemical, nuclear, power generation or other highly regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with NAECI labour agreements.
  • Experience in major construction or engineering projects.
  • Experience with subcontractor procurement and detailed quotation analysis.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Proven experience managing the estimating process within the construction or engineering industry.
  • Valid CSCS card.
  • Strong commercial and numerical capability.
  • Excellent understanding of estimating principles, cost planning and risk.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office and estimating systems.
  • Experience with digital estimating and 5D cost planning would be advantageous.
  • Understanding of BIM, including reading and assembling BIM models and producing reports, would be desirable.
  • Knowledge of Lean Construction principles and value engineering would be beneficial.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body or qualification such as RICS, CIOB, RIBA, ICE or CIBSE is desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience leading or mentoring an estimating team is advantageous.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight tender deadlines.
  • Able to build strong relationships with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders.
