Our client are enabling the energy essential to support our lives. They provide an end-to-end service, delivering solutions in electricity transmission, distribution, renewable energy, EV, metering and home decarbonisation. This role will be within their Transmission & Renewables team. They design, build and commission substations at voltages up to and including 400kV. Their teams construct and maintain transmission lines and substations, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of electricity. You'll be covering projects in the South West and South Wales with visits to regional offices - willingness to travel is a must!
What will you be doing?
As Head of Commercial, you’ll play a pivotal role on the Senior Management Team, driving strategic relationships with our clients and championing commercial excellence across the business. Are you ready to be the key voice ensuring commercial risks and opportunities are clearly communicated and understood? With a sharp focus on governance, you’ll lead in maintaining robust commercial controls, overseeing project valuations, validating progress data, and ensuring our reporting is accurate and timely.
Team Management and Development
- Ensure the Contracts commercial team adheres to group procedures and governance
- Set the structure, roles, responsibilities and competencies required to deliver the commercial management services efficiently
- Build a high performing team (manage development of personal plans, establishment of objectives/targets for all direct reports and monitor regularly)
- Plan and implement structured development and training of Commercial Practitioners including supervisor / mentor / counsellor role for staff undertaking their APC or equivalent
- Promote a culture of contractual & commercial awareness within the Contracts
Commercial Service Delivery
- Collaborate with the Business Unit Director to set the annual business plan and strategy
- Lead work-winning efforts, resource allocation, and coordination with pre-contract commercial teams
- Develop and implement commercial strategies covering tenders, cash flow, and margin improvement
- Review contractual obligations and commercial risks before tender submission
- Negotiate contract conditions within Group Governance prior to execution
- Ensure proper contract administration through regular reviews of change control and payment mechanisms
- Oversee monthly cost/value reconciliations and forecasts; challenge and support Contract teams
- Maximise cash flow and manage WIP across all projects
- Collaborate with Contract and Legal teams to prevent or resolve disputes
- Identify insurance recovery opportunities and liaise with the Insurance department
- Attend monthly project reviews to assess performance and take corrective action
- Participate in reviews to report on current and future contract performance
- Ensure compliance with year-end audit requirements
- Drive achievement of annual objectives and targets for Contracts

What you’ll bring
- Preferably degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or other relevant business discipline
- Commercially astute with substantial proven experience within a similar role in the Electricity Transmission industry
- Expert knowledge of Standard Forms of Contract, relevant Contract Law and Standard Methods of Measurement
- Understanding of programming techniques and project controls
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to negotiate a position to a desired outcome
- Excellent leadership skills with a desire to develop and nurture a high performing team!
- Full clean UK driving license - travel across sites & regional offices is a requirement
