About the apprenticeship role…
You’ll learn directly from our experienced team, building your understanding of all aspects of civil engineering. You’ll apply your knowledge to live projects, delivering a wide range of design and construction (D&C) projects for water and wastewater networks and treatment facilities, helping ensure they meet technical standards and are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality.
Alongside your work, you’ll study towards a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering earning a BEng (Hons) with our university partner. This is a 4-5-year programme including end point assessment (EPA). As an apprentice, you will work 40 hours per week and your time will be split between site visits, working from your office location, working from home, and attending university in block placements throughout the year. This role will be based in Birmingham. This role is a September 2026 start.
What your day could look like…
- Learning to contribute to outline and detailed design work, both independently (with supervision) and as part of a collaborative team, within agreed timescales.
- Developing your ability to gather, analyse and report on technical information to support project delivery.
- Learning how to meet client specifications by applying project requirements in line with relevant standards.
- Helping with technical tasks that match your current skills and knowledge, with support to grow your capabilities.
- Working with guidance and gradually taking on more responsibility as your experience grows.
- Learning to carry out site visits, surveys and inspections, gaining practical insight into how projects come together.
- Understanding how to prepare and review feasibility studies, assessments and technical reports, ensuring they meet Avove’s standards and procedures.
- Developing your skills in preparing and reviewing design approaches, calculations, drawings and documentation.
We give all our apprentices the equivalent of one day a week to dedicate to your studies and time to attend training with your apprenticeship provider.
About you…
You will need the following to be eligible for this apprenticeship:
- Minimum of 5 GCSEs including Maths and English at a grade 4 or above.
- 3x A Levels at grades BBC as a minimum and one must be Maths. General Studies is not accepted. Or BTEC DMM minimum - at least a merit in both Maths and Further Maths units. Acceptable courses are Civil Engineering, Aerospace, Construction, and Mechanical Engineering.
A driving license is always a bonus. If you are currently learning to drive, we may be able to support financially towards this, dependent on meeting our criteria.
This opportunity would be a great fit if you’re confident using digital tools like Microsoft Office and enjoy working with others. We’re looking for someone who communicates clearly, stays organised, and pays attention to detail. You’ll need to be comfortable working in a team and able to take initiative when working independently.
