Eligibility
Special Constable Transferees are officers who wish to move from one police force to another without a break in service.
To Apply As a Transferee, You Must
- Currently serve with a UK Home Office police force as a Special Constable
- Hold Independent Patrol Status (IPS)
Recruitment Process
Once we receive your application, we will ask you to complete a Training Needs Assessment and provide evidence of your previous training records. These documents will then be reviewed by our Training Department. Please note that transferee applications are currently being assessed on a case‑by‑case basis. This helps us identify any additional training you may require upon transferring. If no further immediate training is needed, we will progress your application. If additional training is required, your start date may be delayed, as you will need to attend a Special Constable transferee course. At present, we do not have any transferee courses scheduled for 2026.
To successfully transfer, applicants must complete all of the following stages:
- College of Policing National Sift
- Interview
- Pre-Appointment Checks
- Fitness Test
- Medical
- Substance Misuse Test
- Biometrics Checks
- Vetting Reference Checks (Covering the last 5 years)

Posting Arrangements
Officers are normally posted within a 15‑mile journey of their home address. When assigning postings, we consider:
- Your previous skills and experience
- Operational requirements
- Any reasonable preferences you request
Where possible, we will allocate your preferred patrol base, provided it is within a practical travelling distance. Our aim is to ensure your volunteering experience is convenient, supportive, and reflective of the value we place on your contribution.
