Are you an experienced equestrian professional looking for a unique and rewarding role? Avon and Somerset Police are looking for a committed and confident Groom to join our Mounted Section team. This is an exciting opportunity to work within a professional police equine environment, supporting the care, fitness, and operational readiness of our police horses. Working as part of a highly motivated team, you will play a vital role in ensuring our horses are maintained to an exceptional standard for daily operational policing duties. This role would suit someone with strong equine experience who is confident handling and riding large horses, enjoys working outdoors, and takes pride in maintaining high standards of horse care and stable management.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide day-to-day care for police horses including feeding, grooming, rug changes, clipping, and general welfare
- Exercise and school horses to a high standard, both independently and with others
- Ride horses up to 17.3hh
- Muck out stables and maintain excellent yard hygiene standards
- Clean and maintain tack, kit, and equipment
- Operate the horse walker and support exercise routines
- Assist with maintaining paddocks, grasslands, arenas, and yard facilities
- Support the presentation and operational readiness of horses for policing duties
What We’re Looking For
- British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 2 qualification, including all five modules (certificates will be required)
- Previous experience working within a professional equine environment
- Experience in horse care, stable management, veterinary support, and exercising horses
- Confidence riding and handling large horses
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Basic IT skills and confidence using standard computer systems
Shift Pattern
This is a shift-based role operating on a four-week rota. Shifts include:
- 07:00 – 15:00
- 12:00 – 20:00
- Weekend working
- Allocated rest days
