Location: SWROCU Northern Hub, Bristol (near BS34 6PY) / Poole Police Station.

Role Overview

Assisting the existing team of police officers and technical specialists in developing new and emerging technological solutions to tackle serious and organised crime across SWROCU and its constituent forces. The role involves collaborating with regional and national units, deploying specialist technical capabilities, researching, testing and deploying innovative techniques, and supporting investigations in cyber threats, economic crime, drug conspiracies, modern slavery, human trafficking, child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and prototype new technologies for Targeted Equipment Interference (TEI).
  • Work closely with police officers and other experts to integrate TEI solutions into operational workflows.
  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies, platforms and tools relevant to law‑enforcement investigations.
  • Support field teams in the use and maintenance of technical equipment.
  • Contribute to the creation of best‑practice guidance and training materials.

Essential Qualifications

  • Knowledge of emerging technology, trends and how it impacts TEI data collection capability, with an understanding in at least two of the following:
    • Web technologies and cloud environments
    • System (Windows, Linux, macOS), Network and Database administration
    • Computer and mobile phone forensics
    • Network forensics (packet and traffic analysis)
    • Firmware / driver development
    • RF technologies
    • Code review
    • Distributed application development
    • Software reverse engineering (multiplatform)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise workloads and meet tight timelines in a dynamic environment
  • Programming in Python or an equivalent high‑level language (C, C++, JavaScript, SQL, PowerShell, PHP, VB.NET, Tuby, Perl or ASP)
  • RF propagation
  • Must be able to travel around the region and the UK as required; a UK driving licence is required

Desirable Skills

  • Understanding of how multiple TEI techniques can be applied consistently within national operating models
  • Demonstrable interest in technology, e.g. participation in CTF events, OSINT, anonymising technologies, microcontroller electronics
  • Virtualisation technologies, systems engineering, practical red/blue team concepts
  • Experience or interest in researching and developing technology‑based solutions
  • Degree qualification or equivalent experience (BSc, BEng, etc.)
