Avon and Somerset Police are looking for an enthusiastic and confident individual to join our Cyber Team as a Digital Media Investigator (DMI). This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of technology, investigations and safeguarding, supporting serious and complex investigations across the force.
The Role
If you are curious rather than overwhelmed by concepts like metadata, digital artefacts, online attribution or digital intelligence, this could be the perfect next step in your career. As a Digital Media Investigator, you will provide specialist digital support to investigations involving serious violence, sexual offences, cybercrime, child protection and safeguarding. Step inside the role of a Digital Media Investigator and discover how digital evidence can become the key to protecting victims and solving complex investigations. You will work closely with CID, Cyber Teams, safeguarding teams and Senior Investigating Officers, helping identify digital opportunities early and ensuring evidence is secured properly and proportionately from the outset. No two investigations are the same and your work will often play a critical role in identifying evidence, developing intelligence and supporting investigative decisions. This is a role where technical thinking meets real-world impact.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide tactical digital advice and ongoing support to investigators
- Identify, capture and assess digital evidence, including online and network-based material
- Support cyber-dependent and cyber-enabled investigations
- Conduct open-source research and intelligence development
- Attend crime scenes, arrests and interviews where required
- Deliver digital guidance, briefings and training to officers and staff
- Support proactive and, where appropriate, covert activity
- Manage your own investigative workload
- Offer professional and empathetic guidance to victims of cybercrime
In many investigations, your involvement could be the difference between crucial evidence being identified or missed entirely.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for people who are analytical, adaptable and motivated by solving problems. You should have:
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
- Experience in investigations, intelligence development or open-source research
- Confidence working with serious and sensitive investigations
- Good decision-making skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
- A working understanding of networks and digital evidence
- A full UK driving licence
You do not need to know everything from day one. We are looking for people with curiosity, resilience and a willingness to learn and develop specialist skills within a supportive team environment. Experience or knowledge in the following areas would also be beneficial:
- Cybercrime and cyber prevention
- Digital investigations or technical investigative processes
- Working with digital devices or digital data
- PIP Level 1 qualification, or willingness to complete training
