Full Time Permanent Location: SWROCU Northern Hub, Bristol, near BS34 6PY Poole Police Station. Please note that the location of the role will have an impact on the terms and conditions. Role Description: SWROCU is looking for a Technical Deployment Specialist keen to progress their careers as part of our Targeted Equipment Interference (TEI) and Technical Development Unit. The TEI Deployment Specialist will assist the existing team, comprising of Police officers and individual technical specialists in the development of new and emerging technological solutions to tackle serious and organised crime across the SWROCU and its constituent forces. The role will entail collaboration with other regional and national units alongside other LEA agencies to deploy specialist technical capabilities. The role will involve the research, development, testing and deployment of new and innovative techniques. The role will suit those with technical capability alongside the willingness to learn and drive to solve problems with innovative and novel thinking.

SWROCU is a collaboration of police officers and police staff from the five South West regional forces. We’re part of a national network of nine ROCUs covering England and Wales. We have more than 20 capabilities that staff and officers work in to Pursue offenders, Protect and Prepare individuals and organisations, and Prevent people from engaging in serious and organized crime. Our capabilities are here to advise, to assist, or to fully adopt investigations. We work with local forces and national partners to target and disrupt criminals posing the greatest risk of Serious and Organised Criminality (SOC). This includes offenders involved in cyber threats, economic crime, drug conspiracies, modern slavery and human trafficking, and child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications Required:

Essential:
  • Knowledge of emerging technology, trends and how it impacts on TEI data collection capability with an understanding in at least two of the following:
    • Web technologies and cloud environments
    • System (Win, Linux, OSx), Network and Database administration
    • Computer and mobile phone forensics
    • Network forensics (packet and traffic analysis)
    • Firmware / driver development
    • RF technologies
    • Code review
    • Distributed application development
    • Software reverse engineering (multiplatform)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to work under pressure, prioritising workloads and working to tight timescales within a dynamic environment.
  • Experience or Interest in the following:
    • Programming in Python or an equivalent high‑level language (C, C++, Java Script, SQL, Powershell, PHP, VB Net, Tuby, Perl or ASP)
    • RF propagation
  • Must be able to travel around the region and the UK may be required as dictated by operational demands. A UK Driving License will be required.
Desirable:
  • Understanding of how the multiple methods of TEI techniques can be applied consistently, structured cohesively together, in line with national agreed operating models
  • A demonstrable interest in technology that would demonstrate knowledge or interest in the following:
    • Involvement in CTF events and similar platforms
    • OSINT
    • Anonymising technologies and techniques
    • Digital and/or analogue electronics, including microcontrollers
    • Virtualisation technologies
    • Systems Engineering
    • Practical Red/Blue teaming concepts
    • Experience or interest in researching and developing technology-based solutions
  • Professional qualifications in the following:
    • Qualified to degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant field (BSc, BEng etc)
    • Programming in Python or an equivalent high‑level language (C, C++, Java Script, SQL, Powershell, PHP, VB Net, Tuby, Perl or ASP)
