Role Summary
We are recruiting Autonomous Vehicle Safety Officers to support the testing and controlled deployment of autonomous passenger vehicles within UK cities. You will be the human safety layer responsible for overseeing vehicle behaviour, maintaining compliance with UK traffic and PHV regulations and ensuring safe operational delivery at all times. The position demands strong situational awareness, disciplined decision making and a proactive approach to risk management and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles safely on UK public roads, acting as the primary safety layer
- Conduct structured pre and post journey checks, escalating risks promptly
- Maintain full compliance with the UK Highway Code and local PHV regulatory standards
- Intervene where required to safeguard safety, legality and customer protection
- Record operational data, insights and exceptions for technical and analytics teams
- Support the refinement of AV Operations operating procedures, SOPs and training frameworks
- Represent AV Operations professionally with regulators, partners and operational stakeholders
Requirements
- Valid UK driving licence (clean) - 5+ years
- Valid Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) licence issued by TfL or the relevant regional authority
- PCO experience - 3+ years driving
- Strong hazard perception with a proven safety first discipline
- Confident communicator capable of delivering concise and accurate reporting
- Ability to understand technical concepts and translate observations into actionable feedback
- Flexibility to work variable schedules aligned to test windows and operational demands
- Strong communication skills and a clear ability to empathise with others
- Happy to work alone and equally happy working within a team
- Adaptable, flexible and passionate about solving problems with innovative solutions
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, or equivalent (Google Suite)
Employment is contingent upon passing pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol testing, in accordance with our Drugs & Alcohol policy.
You have an advanced driving background: Emergency Response Advanced Driver, or similar driving qualifications
