This is an excellent opportunity to join our growing Cloud Platform Engineering team at its technical heart. Are you someone who works confidently across AWS and wants to shape how a cutting‑edge platform is built, rather than just work within it? Working in a market leading Financial Services organisation, for the benefit of millions of customers, this role puts you at the centre of a large, dynamic cloud platform. Help us scale it, sharpen it, and serve our customers better, helping to grow and lead the next generation of talent as we do it.
A bit about the role: This is a hands‑on role for someone who leads through expertise. You'll help shape and deliver complex, high‑impact pieces of work from start to finish, and set standards for how we engineer on AWS, helping to define architecture, tooling and best practice to shape the platform for years to come, not just for this sprint. You'll support engineers through key deliveries, lending your judgement where it counts and lifting the bar for everyone around you. You’ll work shoulder to shoulder with engineering leaders and our internal customer teams, turning ambitious ideas into resilient, well‑architected reality. You’ll spot the improvements that matter, line them up against Aviva’s technology priorities, and help drive them through to delivery.
We favour cloud‑native services, and treat Infrastructure as Code as the rule, not the exception. Cloud isn’t just where we run things at Aviva, it’s how we move faster, build smarter, and deliver for millions of customers. We’re looking for a Lead AWS Engineer to join a collaborative engineering team where great ideas matter, and the best ones shine.
Skills and experience we’re looking for:
- Deep expertise across AWS cloud engineering, utilising IaC tools such as Terraform and Ansible to deliver through CI/CD.
- The standing to guide other engineers through complex deliveries, leading through influence and example.
- An understanding for where new technology earns its place, helping the team adopt tools like AI, leading the way in defining ways of working, best practices and standards.
- The ability to explain complex technical information and concepts to someone at any level in the business.
- A strong security mindset, applying secure‑by‑default principles in how you design and build.
What you’ll get for this role:
- Starting salary Circa £80k (depending on location, skills, experience, and qualifications)
- Bonus opportunity 12% – actual amount depends on your performance and Aviva’s
- Generous pension scheme e.g. if you put in 8% Aviva adds 14% in.
- 29 days holiday plus bank holidays, and you can choose to buy or sell up to 5 days
- Aviva‑funded Private Medical Benefit to help you get expert support when you need it
- Make your money go further – up to 40% discount on Aviva products, and other retailer discounts
- Up to £1,200 of free Aviva shares per year through our Matching Share Plan and share in the success of Aviva with our Save As You Earn scheme
- Brilliantly supportive policies including parental and carer’s leave
- Flexible benefits to suit you, including sustainability options such as cycle to work
- Make a difference, be part of our Aviva Communities and use your 3 paid volunteering days to help others
- We take your wellbeing seriously with lots of support and tools
Aviva is for everyone: We’re inclusive and welcome everyone – we want applications from all backgrounds and experiences. Excited but not sure you tick every box? Even if you don’t, we would still encourage you to apply. We also consider all forms of flexible working, including part time and job shares. We flex locations, hours and working patterns to suit our customers, business, and you. Most of our people are smart working – spending at least 50% of their time in our offices every week – combining the benefits of flexibility, with time together with colleagues.
