Reporting to the Head of European Public Policy, you will help develop and execute an EU public policy strategy for Aviva, in close conjunction with senior leaders and expert teams across the business. You will provide insight and direction on public policy issues that impact Aviva’s customers, the company, and society.

Responsibilities

  • Work within the EU Public Policy team as part of a wider UK, International and Corporate Responsibility Department collaboratively shaping the external policy environment, focusing on issues and campaigns most important for our customers, the company and society.
  • Anticipate, identify and proactively manage future EU policy issues of significance to Aviva’s customers and business, and the wider insurance sector.
  • Proactively manage Aviva’s reputation among key European political stakeholders through external contact and campaigning activities, e.g. sustainability or digital/Fintech innovation.
  • React to significant proposals from the EU to promote Aviva’s interests.
  • Become a trusted counsel internally and externally on key issues, winning the respect of opinion formers and senior colleagues.
  • Work closely with the UK Public Policy team, Aviva Global Centre, and local Business Unit colleagues to establish Aviva as a thought leader in the relevant global public policy agenda.
  • Act as a promoter/source of new ideas and challenge, and work in an agile way.
  • Embody Aviva’s values throughout your role: Care more, Kill complexity, Never rest and Create legacy.
  • Be flexible with regular travel (predominantly Brussels, some other European cities).

Qualifications

  • A strong degree qualification.
  • Understanding of how Governments and policy‑making bodies operate, particularly the EU institutions.
  • Hands‑on experience working with Governments, politicians, political groups, officials, public bodies, campaigning groups and trade associations, particularly in an EU context.
  • Strong influencing, negotiation and networking skills.
  • Provided advice/guidance and influence at senior management level.
  • Translated complex matters in a concise way.
  • Programme management experience.
  • Some knowledge of the financial services industry (a particular focus on insurance is desirable), regulatory framework, competitors and key distributors.
  • Understanding of the risks faced by the public policy function and the necessary controls in place to manage and mitigate those risks.
  • A second European language (desirable).
