About the Role
This position will play a key role in delivering high-quality technical support to Aviat Networks internal and external customers across EMEA & APAC.
The primary focus will be remote technical assistance and advanced troubleshooting for microwave transmission products, packet microwave networks, network management systems and associated IP/Ethernet services.
The role is suited to an engineer with strong practical experience of microwave backhaul, multi-vendor transmission networks and service-impacting customer faults, combined with a solid understanding of IP routing, Ethernet switching, Qo S/HQo S, synchronization and network management.
Core Technical Focus
Microwave transmission
Microwave, E-band and multiband link support, RF fault isolation, service-impact analysis, capacity and availability troubleshooting.
Packet networking
IP routing fundamentals, Ethernet switching, VLAN/Qin Q, MSTP/ERP, Qo S and HQo S for carrier-grade transport networks.
Network management
NMS/EMS support, SNMP alarm investigation, software upgrades, backups, RADIUS integration and customer-facing diagnostics.
Synchronization and legacy transport
Sync E, IEEE 1588 PTP, NTP, PDH, SDH and TDM service support during migration to packet-based backhaul.
Responsibilities
- Handle telephone, email and web-based technical enquiries from internal and external customers on Aviat Networks microwave, packet microwave, network management and associated software products.
- Provide structured fault isolation for microwave transmission services, including RF path performance, equipment alarms, capacity, modulation, interference indicators, link availability and customer service impact.
- Troubleshoot Ethernet and IP service issues across microwave and fibre-connected transport networks, including VLAN/Qin Q, L2 protection, routing reachability, traffic rerouting, Qo S/HQo S, packet loss, latency and synchronization impact.
- Support IP routing and carrier Ethernet designs used for mobile backhaul and enterprise transport, including static and dynamic routing concepts, IP addressing, gateway reachability, management-plane connectivity and service separation.
- Support network management platforms and operational tools, including alarm investigation, SNMP/EMS/NMS diagnostics, backup and restore, user access, RADIUS integration, software upgrades and reporting.
- Log all activity, customer updates, troubleshooting evidence and resolution actions in the Aviat Networks case system to maintain clear case history and service accountability.
- Escalate complex issues to TAC Management, product engineering or a higher technical level with clear technical summaries, logs, topology information, service impact and recommended next actions.
- Create, review and execute MOPs, test plans, upgrade procedures, configuration checks and technical notes for customer deployments, swaps, maintenance windows and service migrations.
- Pre-check hardware, software, configuration files and scripts before installation, upgrade or customer execution, ensuring that changes are technically valid and operationally safe.
- Validate new scenarios and customer requirements in the lab or live network, including multiband operation, N+0/N+1 resilience, synchronization plans, Qo S/HQo S profiles and service migration from TDM/SDH to Ethernet/IP.
- Support customer demonstrations, trials, acceptance testing, fault review meetings and post-resolution follow-up to ensure customer satisfaction and service continuity.
- Participate in the TAC on-call rota and support business-critical escalations when required.
- Train on new technologies, products and acquired platforms, including microwave and packet networking.
- Contribute to knowledge base articles, troubleshooting guides and support process improvements based on recurring customer cases and field issues.
- Work with field teams, product specialists and customers to restore service, validate configurations, support upgrades and improve support processes.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Proven technical support, transmission operations or field engineering experience in microwave backhaul or carrier transport networks.
- Strong microwave transmission knowledge, including microwave, E-band and multiband links, RF troubleshooting, link commissioning, traffic migration and service-impact analysis.
- Strong understanding of Ethernet transport, including VLANs, Qin Q, bridge domains, customer/provider bridging, MSTP/RSTP, ERP or equivalent protection mechanisms.
- Good IP networking knowledge, including IP addressing, subnetting, routing principles, management connectivity, reachability troubleshooting and interpretation of routing/switching diagrams.
- Practical experience with Qo S and HQo S concepts such as classification, marking, queues, schedulers, shaping, policing, prioritisation and traffic verification.
- Experience with network management platforms and protocols such as NMS/EMS, SNMP, RADIUS, alarms, software management, configuration backups and performance monitoring.
- Knowledge of synchronization technologies such as Sync E, IEEE 1588 PTP, NTP, SDH/TDM timing and migration from legacy timing designs to packet-based synchronization.
- Experience with legacy and packet transport services, including PDH, SDH, TDM, Ethernet over microwave, Ethernet over SDH, and migration from TDM/SDH to packet backhaul.
- Ability to analyse logs, scripts, configuration files, topology diagrams, test results and customer evidence to reach a clear technical conclusion.
- Good working knowledge of Windows and Linux environments, with basic scripting or automation skills desirable.
- Professional customer communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical faults clearly, manage expectations and document actions accurately.
- Ability to write MOPs, procedures, technical notes and case summaries to a standard suitable for customer and internal use.
- ITIL awareness or certification is desirable.
- Cisco CCNA, Cisco ICND, JNCIA, equivalent IP/Ethernet training or demonstrable practical experience is desirable.
- Experience with MPLS, LDP, RSVP-TE, VPWS, VPLS, L2VPN, L3VPN or similar carrier packet technologies is desirable.
- Experience with RF and Ethernet/IP test equipment is desirable.
- Experience with multi-vendor microwave and transport platforms.
- Fluent business English required; additional languages are advantageous.
