Job Title: IT Infrastructure Solutions Architect
Location: Cambridge | London
Employment Type: Full-time (Hybrid)
We are seeking an experienced and forward‑thinking IT Infrastructure Solutions Architect to lead the architecture, design, and strategic evolution of our hybrid infrastructure platforms driving automation. This senior technical role requires hands‑on engineering excellence and solution design, serving as a technical authority for our on‑premises data centre platforms, virtualization, storage and broader hybrid infrastructure.
Working closely with Infrastructure & Operations (I&O) engineering teams, I&O leadership, and business stakeholders, you will translate business requirements and technology trends into scalable, secure, and resilient infrastructure solutions. You will define standards, lead design decisions, govern technical quality, and guide the team through complex infrastructure programmes whilst ensuring operational platforms remain current, performant, and aligned to the strategic roadmap.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and maintain reference architectures and target‑state designs for VMware VCF 9.0 platform architecture and lifecycle patterns.
- Define Aria Operations observability strategy (telemetry standards, alert philosophy, capacity/performance governance, service reporting) and ensure operational adoption.
- Define VCF Automation platform approach (catalog/service design, templates/guardrails, governance, operational model) and guide implementation and sustainment.
- Define backup/recovery architecture using Veeam and Data Domain, including recoverability assurance and DR readiness patterns.
- Define hybrid cloud architecture and operating model across Azure and AWS (connectivity, identity/access concepts, monitoring/logging, backup/security baselines).
- VDI/RDS architecture and standards: define operationally supportable architectures and standards for Omnissa Horizon, Workspace ONE, and Microsoft RDS (availability, scalability, security controls, patch/lifecycle strategy, monitoring, DR considerations).
- Golden image strategy: define enterprise image/template strategy, including repeatable build pipelines with Packer, template/content distribution using VMware Content Library, validation gates, versioning, rollback, and security hardening baselines.
- Lead solution design and implementation for major infrastructure programmes, migrations, and technology refresh initiatives, ensuring designs are scalable, secure, cost‑effective, and operationally supportable.
- Serve as escalation point for the most complex cross‑domain incidents and systemic problem elimination; ensure strong problem records and post‑incident outputs in ServiceNow.
- Establish engineering standards for automation and configuration management.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and vendor solutions; produce technology assessments, proof‑of‑concept outcomes, and formal recommendations to IT leadership.
- Mentor and coach infrastructure engineers, raising engineering standards, sharing architectural knowledge, and supporting professional development.
Essential Requirements
- At least 12 years of infrastructure/platform engineering experience, including architecture ownership and hands‑on delivery.
- Expert‑level, hands‑on experience of virtualization/private cloud capability (VMware/VCF strongly preferred).
- Experience deploying and operating Horizon/Workspace ONE/RDS at enterprise scale (preferred).
- Strong expertise in storage architecture including SAN (Fibre Channel and/or iSCSI), VSAN, NAS, and software‑defined storage concepts.
- Experience or exposure to infrastructure‑as‑code.
- Proven capability to architect and operationalise enterprise monitoring/observability standards (Logic Monitor and Aria Operations).
- Proven capability to architect, govern, and troubleshoot provisioning automation (VCF Automation).
- Proven backup/recovery architecture and operational assurance experience (Veeam/Data Domain patterns, DR test strategy).
- Hybrid cloud engineering and operations knowledge across Azure and AWS (preferred).
- Strong Windows Server and Linux (preferred) engineering expertise; ability to define standards and troubleshoot complex issues.
- Experience operating in global enterprise environments with audit/compliance expectations.
- Strong security‑by‑design mindset and stakeholder management skills; ability to lead through influence as an individual contributor.
Preferred Qualifications
- VMware Certified (Advanced) Professional (VCP/VCAP) or VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) or equivalent VCF‑level certification.
- Hands‑on experience operating VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0 (SDDC Manager, lifecycle management, vSAN, NSX) in a production environment.
- Higher education in Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
