We are seeking an experienced, motivated and commercially minded Business Development Manager to lead the growth and performance of our pharmacy branches across Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about healthcare, enjoys building relationships, driving commercial success and improving operational performance.

The Role

Reporting directly to senior management, you will be responsible for driving the commercial growth of our pharmacies by increasing retail sales, expanding NHS and private pharmacy services, developing strategic partnerships, improving operational efficiency and identifying new business opportunities. You will work closely with pharmacy managers to ensure each branch achieves its commercial, clinical and operational objectives while maintaining exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement business growth strategies across Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire.
  • Increase retail sales through effective merchandising, promotions, product range optimisation and seasonal campaigns.
  • Grow NHS and private pharmacy services including Pharmacy First, travel vaccinations, weight management, blood pressure checks, contraception, flu vaccinations and other commissioned services.
  • Increase prescription volume, patient footfall and customer loyalty.
  • Develop relationships with GP practices, Primary Care Networks, care homes, hospitals, local businesses and community organisations to generate referrals and new opportunities.
  • Identify and secure new commercial partnerships and service contracts.
  • Analyse branch performance and implement strategies to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Support pharmacy teams to improve customer service, workflow, productivity and service delivery.
  • Introduce and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to maximise branch performance.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining high standards of patient care.
  • Work alongside pharmacy managers to develop business plans and achieve agreed financial and service targets.
  • Organise local marketing campaigns, health promotion events and community engagement activities.
  • Monitor competitor activity and identify opportunities for business growth.
  • Produce regular reports on business performance and future opportunities.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience in business development, healthcare, pharmacy, pharmaceutical sales or retail management.
  • Has a proven track record of increasing sales and business performance.
  • Is commercially minded with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Is an excellent communicator with strong relationship-building abilities.
  • Can motivate and support teams to achieve ambitious targets.
  • Is highly organised and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Is confident presenting to healthcare professionals, businesses and community organisations.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence and is willing to travel regularly across Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire.

Desirable

  • Experience within community pharmacy or NHS services.
  • Knowledge of NHS pharmacy commissioning and clinical services.
  • Existing relationships within primary care, care homes or healthcare organisations.
  • Experience in retail management or multi-site business development.
