Find your feet, grow your confidence and feel part of the team.
Your first steps as an RVN should be exciting. There’s plenty to learn, skills to build and the chance to discover what you really enjoy about nursing. Having people around you who take the time to help, answer your questions and share a laugh makes all the difference.
At Avenues Veterinary Clinic, we’d love to offer you that start.
We’re a genuinely independent small animal practice in Watford, owned by our vet David and his wife. We’re looking for a newly qualified RVN, or someone in the first few years of their nursing career, to join our small, welcoming team.
You’ll need to be a qualified, RCVS-registered veterinary nurse, but you don’t need years of experience behind you. Bring your enthusiasm and willingness to get involved, and we’ll help you build on what you already know.
A team who remember what it’s like to be learning
Our Practice Manager, Sarah, is also an RVN and clinical coach. She’s been part of Avenues since 1999 and has enjoyed helping the next generation of nurses find their feet.
Alongside Sarah, you’ll have our Head Nurse, Krissy, and our wider nursing and support team to turn to. There’s a wealth of experience here, and people who are happy to share it. If you’re unsure about something, we want you to ask.
As the practice grows, we want to make sure our team continues to have the support they need, so we’re welcoming another RVN to Avenues. You’ll be joining colleagues who work hard, look out for each other and will help you settle in and grow in confidence.
“There’s a reason why we retain staff at Avenues, and that’s because of our amazing team. We all share the same ethos, values, and sense of humour, which are much needed in our profession. To feel fully supported by a practice in both a professional and personal capacity is rare. I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.” Sarah, RVN
Independent, with people you know making the decisions
David joined Avenues as an associate in 2012 and took ownership when the previous owner retired in 2020. Having felt so well supported while completing his surgery certificate, he wanted to keep the practice independent and preserve the team spirit that had made him feel so at home here.
Today, he works alongside our two other vets, Gemma and Genna, giving us a three-vet team with plenty of knowledge and experience to share. David is very much part of the day-to-day team, and his commitment to looking after our patients, clients and each other shapes how we work.
Our approach is straightforward: look after our team and provide thoughtful, personalised care for our patients. We consider what’s right for each animal and their owner, including their circumstances. Helping clients access the care their pets need matters to us, and we’ve built lasting relationships with a loyal local client base. As part of our nursing team, you’ll have the chance to build those relationships too, getting to know our patients and supporting their owners through each stage of their care.
Time to enjoy life outside your uniform
We genuinely value our team’s work-life balance and understand how important it is to help everyone stay happy and fulfilled, so we’ve designed our rota to reflect this. You’ll work a 36.5‑hour week across four weekdays.
Your week will include two longer days, a later start and an earlier finish. We’ll confirm the exact shift pattern with you, but your weekday off will stay the same, so you can make regular plans.
Saturday mornings are 8.30am–12.30pm, currently one in four, moving to one in five with our new nurse in place. There are no out‑of‑hours or on‑call shifts, and we’re closed on Sundays and bank holidays, so you’ll have time to switch off too.
We respect your day off and won’t call you in to cover sickness.
We also get together as a team for a mid‑morning tea break whenever the day allows. It’s a chance to catch up with each other, share a laugh and recharge, and it’s these small moments that have helped us build such a strong, connected team.
“I moved to this kind, independent practice to work with a wonderful team and for a better work‑life balance. Having a day off in the week but working slightly longer days really works for me. Not having to work OOH is also a bonus!”
Krissy, RVN
There’s a social side to Avenues, too
From curry nights to our annual “West Fest” at Sarah’s house, we enjoy spending time together outside work. David also treats the team to a Christmas celebration, and this year we’re looking forward to dinner and dancing at a local country manor hotel. We’d love to have our new nurse there with us!
