We have an excellent opportunity for a graduate or school leaver looking to start their career in Underwriting. We are partnered with a leading insurer who are looking to recruit an Assistant Underwriter into their Livestock team. This is an excellent opportunity to join a high performing team, with a real emphasis on career progression and development.

Key responsibilities

  • Solve a wide range of problems, both large and small, with a proactive approach to finding improved solutions.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to enhance processes, relationships, and technology.
  • Communicate effectively via phone, email, and face‑to‑face meetings, ensuring clear and efficient information flow.
  • Adapt to a dynamic environment where priorities may shift and no two days are the same.
  • Collaborate with brokers, clients, and internal teams to gather and verify information and support commercial underwriting decisions.
  • Develop and implement action plans aligned with broader team and business objectives.
  • Work autonomously while contributing to overall team success.

Skills & experience

Essential

  • Strong problem‑solving skills, particularly within a business context.
  • Good standard of numeracy, including confidence working with percentages, ratios, and basic statistical concepts.
  • Excellent communication skills across multiple platforms.
  • Naturally curious mindset with a desire to understand the “why” behind data.
  • Ability to develop and deliver plans aligned with strategic objectives.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Self‑motivated with a results‑driven approach.
  • Strong team player with a collaborative mindset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Desirable

  • Experience in underwriting, broking, or claims (any class of business considered).
  • Knowledge of policy wording and contract analysis.
  • Experience drafting or reviewing policy wordings.
  • Track record of supporting or developing new business opportunities.
