We're looking for a Claims Handler to join our After The Event (ATE) Legal Expenses Claims Team on a 12 month fixed‑term contract covering maternity leave. Working as part of a close‑knit team of five based in our Croydon office, you'll manage legal expenses claims relating to Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence and Professional Negligence matters, while building valuable experience within a highly specialised area of insurance.

The ATE (After The Event) Claims team is responsible for assessing and managing indemnity provided to policyholders for the purpose of pursuing a range of legal actions, including personal injury, clinical negligence, professional negligence and insolvency. The ATE Legal Expenses Claims Handler will assess Legal Expenses Insurance (LEI) claims and ensure they are managed efficiently and fairly.

What you'll be doing

• Deliver an efficient and professional claims handling service by responding to claims using excellent written and verbal communication skills, in line with service standards and agreed service level requirements.
• Manage claims from initial notification through to conclusion, including investigating the validity of claims, gathering relevant evidence and assessing legal costs in accordance with policy terms and conditions.
• Calculate settlement values, issue payments for valid claims and escalated or declined complex or questionable claims where appropriate.
• Accurately capture and maintain claim information on internal systems.
• Liaise primarily with solicitors and, where required, costs lawyers throughout the claims process.

• An early‑career legal professional seeking exposure to insurance and legal expenses.
