Avencia are partnered with a leading, well-established insurer who are looking to recruit a Schemes Underwriter as part of their growing Schemes division. This is a newly created role within a high-performing team that plays a key part in the organisation's long-term growth strategy. The Schemes division is a major growth pillar for the business, with a clear ambition to significantly expand.
This role can be based in Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, London or Croydon. The team operate a hybrid working pattern (3 days per week in the office), with occasional travel to an office hub.
The successful candidate will join a well-established portfolio within the Social Welfare and Care sector, working alongside experienced Underwriters and long-standing broker partners, with excellent scope for development. There is a clear pathway for progression into a Senior Underwriter role, with opportunities to broaden product exposure into areas such as Medical Malpractice and wider liability-led schemes.
Key responsibilities
- Managing referrals and operating within agreed service levels and underwriting authority
- Reviewing surveys and working closely with partner administration teams
- Monitoring inboxes and ensuring timely turnaround of referrals
- Providing clear and constructive feedback to broker partners
- Building strong relationships with key internal stakeholders and broker partners
- Supporting the performance and improvement of delegated binder portfolios
- Becoming involved in additional portfolios as new schemes and opportunities develop
The portfolio is predominantly liability-led, with some property exposure, and offers a higher level of complexity.
Skills & experience
Essential
- Solid liability-led underwriting experience (typically 3+ years)
- Exposure to both new business and renewals
- Strong broker relationships and confident communication skills
- A collaborative mindset and a passion for growing portfolios
Desirable
- Experience in Schemes/delegated business
- Experience underwriting Care/Social Welfare policies
