Avencia are partnered with a leading insurer who are looking to recruit a Legal Expenses Claims Handler to be based in either their Croydon or Manchester office. The business provides legal expenses cover to professionals and commercial clients, supporting civil disputes across areas such as contract matters, property issues, landlord and tenant disputes, and defamation. This role will involve managing claims from first notification through to resolution, working closely with internal colleagues and external legal partners.
Key responsibilities
- Assess and validate civil litigation claims against policy terms and coverage
- Manage a varied caseload including contractual, property, nuisance and boundary disputes
- Review evidence, legal advice and prospects of success to determine appropriate claims strategy, including ADR where suitable
- Set and monitor reserves and ensure claims progress in line with agreed handling standards
- Communicate clearly with policyholders, solicitors and brokers, providing practical guidance throughout the claim
- Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with internal and regulatory requirements
- Support audit activity and contribute to process improvements within the team
Skills & experience
Essential
- Experience in claims handling or civil litigation (for example within an insurer, legal practice, or advisory role)
- Good working knowledge of civil litigation processes and evidential requirements
- Strong analytical skills and sound judgement in decision-making
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain legal concepts simply
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple active cases
Desirable
- Legal qualifications (LLB, LPC, SQE, CILEx or similar)
- Experience in legal expenses insurance or civil liability claims
- Familiarity with CPR, ADR and digital claims systems
