About the Role

We are Avara Foods, one of the UK’s leading food businesses, supplying chicken and turkey to the country’s major supermarkets and well-known restaurants. We own and manage the entire supply chain, from farms to factory to the customer door. The role is factory‑based in a fast‑paced, dynamic FMCG factory environment. You’ll work in a noisy, refrigerated area producing short shelf‑life products where hygiene standards are critical.

What will you be doing as a Maintenance Engineer at Avara?

As a Maintenance Engineer you will optimise machinery output and product quality, minimise plant downtime through effective preventative maintenance, and efficiently respond to breakdowns while maintaining a safe and healthy environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure scheduled maintenance is carried out and effective corrective action is taken.
  • Respond quickly to breakdowns, identify root causes and suggest improvements to prevent recurrence.
  • Communicate unscheduled breakdowns to the Engineering Shift Manager or Principal Engineer and coordinate with operations to minimise disruption.
  • Follow good engineering standards and hygiene practice for the department.
  • Operate within company and legislative health and safety guidelines, highlighting improvement opportunities.
  • Report health and safety, animal welfare and environmental issues promptly.
  • Follow the escalation route for unscheduled downtime and minimise plant disruption.
  • Demonstrate basic problem‑solving techniques to identify root causes.
  • Raise stock and non‑stock request forms.

What You’ll Need to Be Successful

Essential

  • Machine minder or technical operator experience.
  • Keen to develop or progress in a career in engineering.
  • Numerical and reasoning ability to meet entry level requirements for a technical apprenticeship (Functional skills L2 in Literacy and Numeracy and a pass score in Technical Abilities Test).
  • Practical ability to operate within an FMCG factory.
  • Self‑motivated attitude with the ability to multitask and thrive in a timeline‑driven environment.
  • Interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work individually or as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of adjustments required for machinery.
  • Knowledge of likely breakdowns and causes for machinery.
  • Understanding of usual running conditions and capability to identify changes and irregularities affecting performance.
  • Ability to complete inspection, measurement, cleaning and routine parts replacement maintenance.
