The Opportunity: Executes day-to-day lab operations & support objectives at customer facilities, following a defined standard output or set of procedures, focused on minimizing laboratory workflow interruptions. Problems and issues faced are generally recurring and solutions are typically known and/or prescribed. More complex problems are solved by applying methods learned through experience and/or using available support.
Activities may include:
- PPE and/or safety station checks and maintenance
- Reviewing defibrillators, extinguishers and dispensing areas to confirm working order
- Storage, tracking and distribution of chemicals/materials ensuring accurate inventory control
- Hazardous waste collection and recycling
- Collecting, documenting, and organizing data and observations
- Communicating activity records, service level metrics and other information requiring some explanation or interpretation to team members, supervisors or customers
Location: Bath Road, Slough, SL1 3WE, United Kingdom
Working hours: Monday to Friday. Typically 8:00am - 16:30 pm
Responsibilities:
- Glassware, plasticware and laboratory consumables support, including collection, washing, drying, autoclaving and redistribution of laboratory glassware and plasticware, whilst maintaining adequate stock levels across laboratory areas
- Laboratory coat and PPE management, including coordinating laundry services, maintaining clean lab coat inventory, preparing visitor lab coats for site visits, managing name badges and locker/peg allocation, and overseeing the laboratory coat supplier relationship
- Media, buffer and reagent preparation, including monitoring point-of-use stock levels and preparing media, buffers and general laboratory reagents to support scientific activities
- Laboratory equipment and facility maintenance, including cleaning and upkeep of incubators, biological safety cabinets, water baths and UPLC systems, coordinating cold unit inspections and defrost programmes, and performing routine de-icing of liquid nitrogen dewars, lids and seals
- Chemical and inventory management, including collection and processing of chemistry returns, receipting materials on internal inventory systems and ensuring safe storage within chemical stores
- Specialist laboratory services coordination, including provision of autoclaving services, delivery of a mycoplasma testing clinic with timely reporting of results, and organisation of biannual pipette calibration clinics in partnership with external service providers
- Scientific community and customer support, including coordinating on-site exhibitions, supporting exhibitors with logistics and stand set-up, and acting as a key point of contact for laboratory users and internal stakeholders
- Operational and laboratory support activities, including assisting laboratory managers with equipment moves and manual handling tasks using approved handling equipment, while maintaining high standards of laboratory housekeeping, safety and regulatory compliance
- Performance monitoring and record management, including maintaining laboratory service records, tracking service delivery metrics, and recording inspections performed
Required skills include:
- Experience in laboratory support, laboratory operations, facilities management or scientific services environments
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
- Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping capabilities
- Customer service focused approach with strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a wider laboratory services team
- Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications and laboratory management systems
