Remote-first, UK-based PE-backed B2B SaaS business.
A growing B2B SaaS company is looking for a senior technology leader to take ownership of its engineering function and help shape the next stage of its technical growth. The business has a well-established cloud-based software platform used by organisations to manage complex operational, governance and business-critical processes. It is a product-led company with strong market demand, private equity backing and ambitious plans for continued growth.
This is a key leadership role for someone who combines strong technical credibility with the ability to lead, coach and develop a capable engineering team.
The Role
You will lead a distributed engineering team of around 15 people, working closely with Product and the senior leadership team to improve delivery, shape technical direction and support the continued scaling of the platform. This is not a hands-off, corporate technology leadership role. The business needs someone who is close enough to engineering to understand the detail, challenge technical decisions, support architectural direction and help the team improve how they build software. You will not be expected to code day to day, but you should still enjoy technology, understand modern software engineering deeply and be able to command credibility with experienced developers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a distributed engineering team across software development, QA and systems engineering.
- Own and shape the technology roadmap across platform, architecture, delivery, security and developer experience.
- Improve engineering delivery, predictability, throughput and accountability.
- Work closely with Product to translate product ambition into a clear technical roadmap.
- Support pragmatic platform modernisation without unnecessary large-scale rebuilds.
- Bring structure, clarity and pace to the engineering function.
- Coach and mentor engineers and emerging technical leaders.
- Drive the adoption of AI tooling and AI-enabled development practices.
- Help the business define what an effective AI-led software development lifecycle should look like.
- Represent Engineering credibly to senior stakeholders, customers and investors where required.
Technology Environment
The platform is built around a modern SaaS environment including: Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD and daily release processes, Security-focused infrastructure and regular external testing. Ruby experience would be useful, but it is not essential. Strong SaaS engineering leadership, architecture, cloud infrastructure experience and sound technical judgement are more important.
What We Are Looking For
- Senior engineering leadership experience in a B2B SaaS or product-led software environment.
- A background in software engineering, with the technical credibility to lead experienced developers.
- Experience improving engineering delivery, team structure and development practices.
- Strong understanding of SaaS architecture, cloud infrastructure and modern engineering principles.
- Practical interest or experience in AI-assisted software development.
- Ability to introduce AI tools and practices in a thoughtful, secure and effective way.
- Strong coaching, mentoring and people leadership skills.
- Emotional intelligence and the ability to bring different personality types with you.
- Experience leading remote or distributed engineering teams.
- Clear communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in complex B2B software, regulated environments, workflow platforms, data-heavy products or mission-critical SaaS would be beneficial, but is not essential.
Why This Opportunity Is Interesting
This is a chance to join a scaling SaaS business at an important point in its growth journey. You will have the opportunity to:
- Make a visible impact in a business where technology is central to future growth.
- Lead a capable team that is ready for stronger technical direction.
- Shape AI adoption across the engineering function.
- Influence architecture, delivery, developer experience and technical strategy.
- Work in a product-led company with strong market demand and clear growth plans.
- Join a private equity-backed business with ambition and momentum.
Location And Working Pattern
The role is remote-first, but candidates must be UK-based. There will be periodic face-to-face collaboration, around London or the South Coast so candidates must be comfortable travelling for senior leadership meetings when required.
Package
The salary is expected to be around £100,000 to £150,000 (depending on experience) + benefits.
