Software Engineer (Ruby) I’m working with an established, SaaS company looking for a Software Engineer to join its engineering team. The company develops a global platform that helps organisations manage information security, privacy and regulatory compliance, supporting customers across the UK, Europe, the US and APAC. This role would suit a software engineer with solid Ruby and Ruby on Rails experience who enjoys improving existing software, taking ownership of features and contributing ideas within a small team. The Role You’ll work closely with the CTO, Tech Lead and Product Team, owning features from design through to production and improving the platform as you go. The core application is a Rails monolith with more than 15 years of history. Some older patterns remain, while newer development is moving in a modern direction. You should be comfortable understanding what already exists, making considered changes and treating refactoring as part of everyday engineering. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to design discussions and influence how the areas you work on evolve, while continuing to develop alongside experienced colleagues. What You’ll Be Doing * Building and maintaining Ruby on Rails features, taking ownership from design through to production. * Working across legacy and modern parts of the application, addressing technical debt alongside feature delivery. * Improving performance and maintainability in the areas you work on. * Participating in code reviews, pairing, technical planning and design discussions. * Using AI tools extensively in your day-to-day work, reviewing their output and sharing effective approaches with the team. What We’re Looking For You should bring 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, including: * Solid Ruby and Ruby on Rails experience, with sound object-oriented design skills. * Strong back-end engineering skills and a working knowledge of front-end concepts. * Good SQL skills, with confidence writing and understanding queries. * Experience working in an established codebase, including refactoring and managing technical debt. * The ability to deliver features independently once the direction is clear, communicate openly and use AI tools with sound judgement. Experience with Turbo, Stimulus or Hotwire, event-driven architecture, or security and compliance software would be beneficial. An interest in architecture and personal projects demonstrating thoughtful AI use would also be welcome. Technology and AI The environment includes Ruby, Ruby on Rails, MySQL, GitHub Actions, Cypress, Turbo and StimulusJS, with Claude Code used for AI-assisted development. The wider platform includes Action Policy, Rails Event Store, Delayed Job, New Relic, Terraform and Kubernetes on AWS. AI-assisted engineering is an established part of how the team works. You should already be using these tools regularly for activities such as coding, refactoring, testing and documentation. The expectation is not to accept generated code without questioning it. You should understand the output, review it properly and bring your own reasoning to the work. Practical judgement matters as much as enthusiasm for the tools. Why Join? You’ll join a small, capable engineering team with hands-on technical leadership and meaningful responsibility for the product. Your contribution will extend beyond completing tickets. You’ll be encouraged to suggest improvements, collaborate on technical decisions and help the team develop better ways of working
