Junior Software Engineer - Ruby Remote | Full-time, permanent I’m working with an established, private equity-backed SaaS company looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join its engineering team. The company builds software that helps organisations manage information security, privacy and regulatory compliance, with customers across the UK, Europe, the US and APAC. This opportunity would suit someone who has built real things in Ruby, enjoys solving problems and wants to develop their software engineering skills alongside experienced colleagues. The Role You’ll work alongside the CTO, Tech Lead, senior engineers and Product Team, contributing to an established Ruby on Rails platform. You’ll receive regular pairing, code review and clear feedback, while taking responsibility for well-scoped features and improvements. The aim is to help you build confidence, understand how a production application works and develop towards a mid-level engineering role. The core product is a Rails monolith with more than 15 years of history. You’ll encounter both legacy and modern code, learning how to improve an existing application rather than starting everything from scratch. What You’ll Be Doing * Building and maintaining well-scoped product features in Ruby on Rails. * Investigating bugs and making improvements across existing and newer areas of the application. * Writing and maintaining automated tests, including Cypress end-to-end tests. * Learning the codebase through pairing, code reviews and technical planning. * Using AI tools for coding, testing and documentation, carefully checking their output and sharing what you learn. What We’re Looking For You’ll ideally have around 1–2 years of professional experience, or equivalent experience gained through a degree, bootcamp or substantial personal projects. You should bring: * Hands-on experience with Ruby, ideally including Ruby on Rails, and a good understanding of object-oriented programming. * Basic SQL skills and an understanding of relational databases. * Some familiarity with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. * Regular experience using AI coding tools, with the habit of checking and understanding what they produce. * A willingness to ask questions, act on feedback and communicate clearly with the team. Experience with Turbo, Stimulus or Hotwire, automated testing with RSpec, Minitest or Cypress, or personal projects demonstrating thoughtful AI use would be useful, but is not essential. Technology and AI The environment includes Ruby, Ruby on Rails, MySQL, GitHub Actions, Cypress, Turbo and StimulusJS, with Claude Code used for AI-assisted development. The wider platform also uses tools including Rails Event Store, New Relic, Terraform and Kubernetes on AWS. You do not need to know every tool before joining. AI is already part of the team’s day-to-day engineering work. You’ll be encouraged to develop your approach, understand where these tools help and recognise where they fall short. You remain responsible for understanding and reviewing the code you commit. Why Join? You’ll join a small engineering team where you can see your work reach production, learn directly from experienced engineers and build your capabilities through practical delivery. This is an opportunity to develop beyond completing individual tasks, with encouragement to contribute ideas and understand the product you are helping to build
