Want to build a product rather than maintain one? We're partnering with an established engineering and technology business that is making a significant investment in a brand-new software platform to power the next generation of its connected products. This is a rare opportunity to become the first senior software engineering hire on a greenfield initiative. You'll work closely with senior leadership to define the architecture, build the MVP and shape the long-term direction of both the platform and the future engineering team. The vision is to create a modern cloud platform that connects smart devices, processes real-time data and delivers valuable insights through scalable software products.

What you'll be doing:

  • Designing and building a greenfield cloud platform from the ground up
  • Developing APIs, backend services and event-driven applications
  • Collaborating with hardware and engineering teams to integrate connected devices
  • Building scalable solutions for telemetry, analytics and customer-facing applications
  • Helping define technical architecture, engineering standards and best practices
  • Leveraging AI-assisted development tools where appropriate
  • Playing a key role in growing and shaping the software engineering function

We're looking for experience in:

  • Building software products from concept through to production
  • Modern backend development using technologies such as C#, .NET, Java, Kotlin or Python
  • Cloud platforms including Azure, AWS or GCP
  • Designing APIs, distributed systems or event-driven architectures
  • IoT, telemetry, connected devices or real-time data (desirable but not essential)
  • Taking ownership of technical decisions while remaining hands-on

What's on offer?

  • A genuine greenfield product with real technical ownership
  • The opportunity to be the first software engineering hire on a major new initiative
  • Work at the intersection of hardware and software
  • AI-assisted engineering encouraged
  • Significant influence over architecture, product direction and future hiring
  • Hybrid working (1 day per week in the South East)
  • Up to £130,000 salary plus private healthcare and pension

If you're looking for a role where you can combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership and help build a modern software platform from the ground up, we'd love to tell you more.

How to prepare for a job interview at Avanti Recruitment

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Avanti Recruitment uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
