The Role

Joining our team as Commercial Trainee, you will be supported and mentored by our regional commercial team to gain the skills and knowledge to become a successful Quantity Surveyor. This critical role within the housebuilding industry is responsible for budgeting and managing the cost of building new homes. Working in partnership with our preferred training provider, you will also be enrolled on a day release Apprenticeship programme, where you will study towards gaining a Level 3 qualification. You will then apply your learning day to day with the support of the regional Commercial team gaining a depth of experience to excel in your chosen career.

Key duties and requirements

  • Supporting the Quantity Surveying team through various stages of a project, from pre-contract to completion, focusing on cost control, valuation, and financial reporting.
  • Developing a strong understanding of Quantity Surveying principles, practices, and procedures through on-the-job learning and training.
  • Supporting the preparation and submission of weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports, including accurate data entry and analysis as required.
  • Assisting with basic quantity take-offs and measurement tasks to support cost planning and estimating.
  • Contributing to the accurate costing for various aspects of the project.
  • Reviewing drawings and assisting with the issuing of drawings and records to the Subcontractors.
  • Contributing to identifying cost savings and assist with cost control during a project.
  • Assisting with preparation of tenders and support with the procurement of sub-contractors.
  • Processing Subcontract orders, payments and variations, using Excel and Group payment system (COINS).
  • Supporting the evaluation and agreement of variations and instructions for smaller trade packages.

Who are we looking for?

In order to be considered you will possess the following:

  • 5 GCSE's including Maths and English grade 4 or above (Grade C) or an equivalent.
  • A willingness to learn and undertake an agreed qualification alongside the responsibilities listed above.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Computer literate and proficient with MS Office packages.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work to tight deadlines.
  • The ability to work in both a team environment as well as independently using your own initiative.
