A growing UK specialist in robotics and automation is seeking a Project Engineer to support the delivery of bespoke automation projects from concept through to completion. This is a key hire following a period of change, created to strengthen project execution within a small, collaborative engineering team. The successful person will work closely with the Managing Director and senior engineers to ensure projects are delivered smoothly, technically robustly, and on schedule.
This role is not a traditional project management position. The business is looking for someone with a strong engineering or automation background who can actively drive projects forward, coordinate technical teams, and keep delivery on track. The company designs and integrates industrial robotic and automation systems across multiple sectors, with projects typically ranging from £100k–£250k.
Project Engineer - The Role:
- You will take ownership of the day-to-day delivery of multiple automation projects, ensuring they progress efficiently from handover through to installation and sign-off.
- Working closely with engineering disciplines (controls, robotics, mechanical, and electrical), you will help keep projects moving technically and operationally.
Key responsibilities:
- Supporting delivery of multiple concurrent automation projects
- Driving project execution from handover through to installation and final sign-off
- Coordinating engineers across controls, robotics, mechanical, and electrical disciplines
- Ensuring project plans, technical tasks, and timelines are actively progressed (not just monitored)
- Acting as a technical point of coordination between engineering teams, suppliers, and customers
- Attending UK customer sites for kick-offs, progress meetings, and handovers
- Identifying risks and helping resolve technical or delivery issues quickly
- Maintaining momentum across projects to ensure consistent delivery flow
- Supporting continuous improvement in how projects are delivered
This role would suit either:
- An experienced Project Engineer within automation/robotics, or
- A hands-on engineer (controls, electrical, mechanical, or robotics) looking to step into broader project responsibility
You will have:
- Experience in industrial automation, robotics, or engineering project environments
- A background in controls, robotics, mechanical, or electrical engineering
- Strong understanding of how automation systems are delivered and integrated
- Ability to coordinate technical teams and keep workstreams moving
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
- Confidence working directly with engineers, suppliers, and customers
Desirable:
- Experience with industrial robotics or system integration
- Understanding of UKCA / CE machinery safety standards
The business is focused on strengthening its project delivery capability and offers the opportunity to play a key role in shaping how projects are executed going forward. Located in Bedfordshire, this role would be commutable from Milton Keynes, Bedford, Biggleswade, Woburn, St Neots, Luton, Kettering, Northampton, Hatfield and Cambridge.
