This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Control Systems Manager to join a highly respected automation business specialising in bespoke machinery for industries including medical devices and packaging. With a strong order book and continued growth, the company is looking for a hands-on Head of Controls to lead a team of Software & Commissioning and Electrical Engineers while driving the development of innovative automation and robotic solutions.
This role offers a rare combination of technical leadership, project ownership and practical engineering involvement across complex special purpose machinery projects.
Control Systems Manager - The Role:- To be responsible for the management and delivery of all control system projects on time, to budget and to the required national and international standards.
- Lead and manage all controls engineering projects from concept through to commissioning and customer handover.
- Oversee a team of Software & Commissioning and Electrical Engineers, supporting development and high-quality delivery.
- Design and develop machine control and safety systems for automated machinery.
- Develop PLC and HMI software for complex automation systems and electrical documentation using Eplan.
- Support electrical design activities including ePlan documentation, BOMs and system specifications.
- Commission, test and optimise special purpose machines and automation systems.
- Program and integrate industrial robots including 6-axis, SCARA and Delta robots.
- Support FAT and SAT activities alongside customer training and ongoing technical support.
- Drive standardisation, continuous improvement and best practice across controls engineering activities.
- Work closely with customers, suppliers and internal teams throughout project delivery.
- Strong background in automation and control systems with leadership experience.
- Experience with PLC platforms including Omron, Siemens or Allen Bradley.
- Knowledge of robotics integration and machine automation.
- Strong understanding of electrical schematics and pneumatic systems.
- Previous experience within special purpose machinery or automated systems.
- Excellent communication and team leadership skills.
- Hands-on engineering approach with strong problem-solving ability.
- Flexible approach to travel, commissioning and customer support activities.
