Autism West Midlands is a leading charity in the West Midlands for people on the autism spectrum. We use our expertise to enrich the lives of autistic people and those who love and care for them. Our passionate, expert staff and volunteers work across all age groups and abilities, by providing personalised support. Our Community Services team enables autistic adults, children, and their families to access support within their local community to build resilience, confidence, and skills to actively participate in society.

The Green Offer will provide preventative support to adults over 18 who are or have been at risk of hospital admission and are on the Dynamic Support Register (DSR). The service will provide both practical and sensitive support with a specific focus around autism. This will enable people to live more autonomously and help them participate in their community. The Green Offer has been commissioned by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Provider Collaborative, and will offer a service across both Birmingham and Solihull. The project is initially funded for 18 months and will support 65 people per year, working in conjunction with the Birmingham Pre & Post Diagnosis Service (BPAP) and focusing on supporting individuals in need of more intensive support.

Key Aspects of the Autism Specialist Advisor Role

  • The post holder must be flexible to work as part of a small team, including working outside normal hours when required (evening and weekend work).
  • A full driving licence and access to a car is essential.
  • Community access – enabling people to access community services through supportive signposting (e.g., advocacy, housing, financial support).
  • Autism-related support – exploring autistic identity, aspects of autism such as sensory needs, communication, and developing coping strategies.
  • Practical support and planning.
  • Listening and exploring self-advocacy.
  • Assess needs and devise coproduced support based on the support needs identified by autistic adults.
  • Organise and facilitate social groups and activities for autistic adults.
  • Deliver tailored autism awareness training to professionals supporting autistic adults in the community (in person or online).
  • Attend contract review meetings with the Service Manager when required.
  • Collate and compile performance information, including impact measures and service user feedback to inform contract reporting.
  • Positively raise awareness of the needs of autistic adults when opportunities arise, and specifically by attending information events and strategic working group meetings.
  • Keep and manage case records securely and dispose of them according to legal requirements and Autism West Midlands policy.
  • Work flexibly and be prepared to undertake work outside normal hours if required for effective delivery of the service.
  • Positively promote and raise the profile of autistic people and Autism West Midlands.
  • Collect, record and present statistical information by imputing data onto AWM’s cloud-based database (Charity Log).
  • Develop positive relationships with local organisations and groups who work with autistic adults.
  • Attend and participate in mandatory and relevant training courses as and when required.
