We’re looking to recruit a Caretaker to join our team at Sutherland House School. In this role, you’ll be involved in the repair, servicing, and construction (where applicable) of fixtures, fittings and equipment, together with buildings and site maintenance and decoration.
We are seeking candidates who have good communication skills and a friendly and focused approach. The successful candidate will have a background in caretaking or site officer/premises with experience in carrying out variety maintenance and repair work to a professional standard.
Immediate Start
1 year fixed-term contract with a view to 25 hours per week, timings to be confirmed depending on experience.
Salary - £17,593.98
Your Experience:
- It is preferred that you have previous experience working within an educational setting.
- Previous experience of working as a cleaner/caretaker/site manager and an understanding of different cleaning methods and equipment.
- Basic awareness of health and safety standards as applied to cleaning and caretaking.
Professional Skills:
- Literacy skills to complete forms and orders, write instructions and communicate effectively via email.
- Willingness to develop knowledge of use of ICT and other specialist equipment/resources.
- Be flexible to the changing demands of the post.
- Ability to respond to straightforward problems and unforeseen circumstances e.g. hazards and accidents.
- Understand when to escalate an issue to your line manager.
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment, machinery and tools and undertake basic maintenance tasks.
- Take pride in a job well done.
- Able to work under your own initiative and as part of a team.
- A hardworking, resilient, flexible individual that is used to working in a fast-paced environment.

- Possess or must be willing to train for the “First Aid at Work” or “Emergency First Aid at Work” qualification approved by the HSE as requested.

Main Responsibilities:
- Operate and respond to alarm systems where appropriate.
- Carry out health and safety checks such as legionella temperature control, fire alarm tests, fire call point testing and similar.
- Carry out tasks assigned to you from the maintenance log and input any new tasks requested by staff onto the log.
- Undertake appropriate repairs e.g. redecorating, fixing.
- To carry out various maintenance duties to ensure the general upkeep and maintenance of the premises is satisfactory.
- To carry out decoration programmes per schedules drawn up.
- To carry out minor improvement work e.g. erecting shelves, noticeboards, fitting locks, realigning doors, etc.
- Operation and maintenance of lighting systems.
- Identify defects and record repair and maintenance requirements.
- Collect and assemble waste for collection.
- Undertake cleaning duties such as graffiti removal, litter picking.
- Coordinate deliveries to Sutherland House School.
- Liaise with contractors and inform admin of key dates.
- Monitor energy consumption taking meter readings as and when required.
- Provide emergency first aid as required.
