The Role
We are seeking a motivated and experienced safety professional to join the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) Work Health and Safety Strategy and Assurance team.
As a Senior Safety Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting DSTG by:
- Monitoring and reporting on key work health and safety (WHS) performance indicators
- Leading the development and maintenance of tools and processes to capture safety performance data
- Ensuring compliance with legislative frameworks, Defence\’s WHS policy and strategy requirements
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Be accountable, under broad direction, for performing and achieving complex WHS specialist work within an integrated workforce
- Support the Defence Enterprise Safety Management System (SafetyMan) and DSTG’s Safety Management System (DSTGSafe)
- Further or deepen your professional knowledge in the systems integration, data and/or assurance areas
About our Team
The DSTG Work Health and Safety Strategy and Assurance team engages with broader Defence to ensure alignment with the Defence SMS and implementation of the Defence WHS Strategy. This team supports the Chief Defence Scientist (CDS) and DSTG Leadership Team (DLT) with reporting in support of due diligence. This team works to support Hazard Leads and is part of the group safety function established to assist researchers meet safety and compliance obligations.
The group safety function consists of two teams comprising of Safety Operations, and Safety Strategy and Assurance. These teams work cooperatively together to provide consistent professional WHS capability to support researchers in meeting the Defence I&ST Strategy.
A small team delivers the WHS Strategy and Assurance, with team members based at both the Fishermans Bend site in Port Melbourne, Victoria, and the Edinburgh site in Adelaide, South Australia. The Senior Safety Specialist role can be located at either site and may occasionally travel to other DSTG or Defence locations.
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a safety professional with skills in data analytics. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in developing and maintaining data solutions, integrating multiple data sources, with a solid understanding of what this data means in the context of health and safety.
They will bring the following skills and attributes:
- Experience as a safety professional with systems, assurance, data analysis, and/or reporting experience.
- Proven experience in developing and maintaining data solutions, integrating multiple data sources, with a solid understanding of what this data means in the context of health and safety.
- The ability to develop and use reporting tools, such as Power BI, to inform stakeholders and evaluate activities and processes for compliance with work health and safety legislation, policies, and procedures.
- The ability to design data models based on technical and business needs.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to engage with internal and external stakeholders on complex and sensitive work health and safety issues and work collaboratively with stakeholders and subject matter experts to resolve work health and safety issues.
- Meet deadlines and ask for help.
