The SCADA Technician is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance and operational support of Aurora Utilities’ Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems across the Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) estate. The role ensures that all SCADA assets operate reliably, securely and in compliance with engineering and cyber‑security standards, enabling safe and efficient network management. The post‑holder will play a key part in supporting real‑time network visibility, fault response, and the integration of new substations and distributed energy assets into the control environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Responsibilities
    • Install, commission and maintain SCADA Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and associated communications equipment at substations and field locations.
    • Configure telemetry points, control functions, alarms, trending and communications protocols in accordance with engineering standards.
    • Undertake Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and integration testing for new networks and upgrade schemes.
    • Support the development, documentation and implementation of SCADA standards, templates, and configuration guidelines.
    • Troubleshoot communication failures, device malfunctions, configuration errors and network interface issues.
    • Assist with the deployment and maintenance of network monitoring systems, including historian databases and real‑time analytics tools.
    • Ensure all changes to SCADA systems follow Aurora Utilities’ Change Management process.
  • Operational Support
    • Provide operational support to Control Room staff, particularly during network faults, system alarms or real‑time visibility issues.
    • Carry out regular inspections and health checks on SCADA equipment, communications infrastructure and data integrity.
    • Maintain accurate asset records, wiring diagrams, configurations and technical documentation.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Work closely with Network Operations, Planning, Engineering and external contractors to deliver SCADA‑related projects.
    • Liaise with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) regarding telemetry integration, data exchange and control requirements.
    • Provide training and guidance to operational staff on SCADA system use and basic diagnostics.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Essential
    • Experience working on SCADA systems, telemetry equipment or operational technology within an electrical utility, renewable energy provider, or industrial control environment.
    • Understanding of DNP3 or IEC 61850 protocols.
    • Practical experience with RTUs, or substation automation systems.
    • Strong fault‑finding and diagnostic capabilities in both hardware and software environments.
    • Working knowledge of communications systems such as fibre, LTE/4G networks.
    • Ability to interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and network diagrams.
    • Strong awareness of cyber‑security principles in OT systems.
  • Desirable
    • ONC/HNC or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications or a related discipline.
    • Experience within IDNO, DNO, transmission, or critical national infrastructure environments.
    • Familiarity with electrical distribution networks (LV/HV), protection devices, and control philosophies.
    • Vendor‑specific experience (e.g., Schneider, Siemens, Lucy, RTU suppliers, SCADA head‑end systems).
