We’re currently looking to recruit a Maintenance Assistant to join our team across our sites in Surrey. You will be working from Redehall School in Smallfield and Poppyfield School in Effingham. You will be responsible for ensuring that all matters relating to the continuous operation, grounds and equipment are maintained in such a way that ensures a high quality site service is provided at all times thus ensuring the safeguarding, health, safety and general well-being of all those accessing the site. You will be working with the premises manager you will also contribute to the development of the services through site expansion projects and integrating new/developed buildings.
Our students range from 6 – 16 years old across the sites with difficulties with communication and social interaction, typically associated with Autism. Redehall School and Poppyfield School share the same Principal, but all other staff are separate, although the sites operate separately, students and staff do cross between sites.

Key Duties:
- Deliver all activities with an energy efficient approach and ethos.
- Respond to and resolve Ad hoc maintenance requests via online ticketing software.
- Organise and carry out the collection and movement of furniture and equipment as directed.
- Ensure all fire and safety equipment and systems are functional and that safety awareness is promoted.
- Ensure all relevant procedures and checks are completed in accordance with policy.
- Support the Annual Fire Risk Assessment process.
- Ensure all appropriate fire procedure communication for all visitors to site and ensure that all contractors are briefed in detail of requirements to avoid fire risks.
- Carry out monthly vehicle check audits and report any concerns.
- Ensure the safe storage of tools and equipment and help to maintain the equipment register.
- Ensure the safe storage of materials, paints etc. in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
- Attend your place of work reliably and punctually and maintain a good corporate image.
- Play a full part in building good relationships with other staff, students and stakeholders.
- Carry out regular planned maintenance inspection on services, utilities and the building fabric throughout the school. Report findings and take necessary actions.
- Carry out any additional tasks and responsibilities instructed by the Premises Manager as and when required.
- Maintain the school grounds to an acceptable level.
- Ensure all school buildings are fit for purpose and maintained well to provide a suitable education environment for the pupils.
Please note that duties will vary and you will be expected to contribute to the overall aims of the schools when required.
Skills and Qualifications
- Flexibility and sensitivity to the needs of a wide range of users with complex needs is essential.
- Understands and can apply Legislation and Regulations relating to all aspects of site management e.g. to fire, health and safety, Legionella, asbestos, security, COSHH and Safeguarding (within a college/ school environment preferred).
- Competent at basic building repairs and maintenance and grounds maintenance and to effectively delegate and monitor work of others.
- Computer literacy skills essential due to the utilisation of the internal CAFM system.
- Knowledge of current Health & Safety regulations. Health and Safety qualification desirable.
- Ability to liaise with staff at all levels of technical knowledge.
- Enthusiastic and pro-active, keen to be involved.
- General maintenance knowledge preferably with a qualification in electrics / plumbing. Alternatively, a construction trade.
- Customer service and problem solving approach.
